Review of new Vanden Plas release

Sure, they're technical. That doesn't make it a prog band. Their music is SO technical that it makes it hard to remember it. To me, one of the most important things in a song is the melody. A song can't be memorable if the vocal melody doesn't stick to your mind. When it comes to Between the Buried and Me, none (and I mean ZERO) of the melodies are memorable. They're way too all over the place. I have listened to Colors many times. Musicianship is great, but I can't remember a single song, even after listening to it repeatedly.
This. And the same goes for the entire crop of bands of similar style. Don't get me wrong, I find what these bands do impressive. But not impressive in a way that makes me reach for their CDs.

Bryant, plan on this being your favorite Vanden Plas release. It's definitely mine :)

The funny thing about Vanden Plas is..... when I first heard "The God Thing" I was hooked. I said to myself that they can't top that release...... all of a sudden, "Far Off Grace" does just that. Well, after FOG, I knew for certain they couldn't top that one............ it has been the same story after every release. Vanden Plas keeps getting better and better. I am afraid if the trend continues, I might just go into convulsions after listening to a release and spend my remaining life as a vegetable. Their style and sound absolutely hit the right note with me.

I feel the same way. You better look into some medication because this one will give you a fit

My opinion on Vanden Plas mirrors Taliwakkers. Great band on a whole, but to me lack that little something that can get me listening to them regularly. For me they're not quite in that league of Circus, Pagans and Seventh Wonder. Or vintage Dream Theater for that matter.

On the other hand I was gutted when I came all the way over for ProgPower 8 and saw the infamous sign on the front door on showcase night. Vanden Plas were one of the bands I was really keen on seeing.

Ok, it's official now. The Seraphic Clockwork is a hell of an album!! If you thought Christ 0 was good, prepare to be amazed.

Yeah .. it's awesome. I thought Christ 0 would be a very tough act to follow, but they've seemingly done it. I'd give Christ 0 the edge still, but in time The Seraphic Clockwork might be able to nudge past it.
