Ripper joins Yngwie Malmsteen

Barlow a legend? Surely you're not putting him on the same level as Rob Halford. Not even close.

Barlow is not a legend on the same level as Halford or say a Dickinson, but the man is a LEGEND in Iced Earth. If you can;t see that, then that is your deal.:kickass:

Barlow is a legend to his FANS and those are the only people that matter. His fans like myself think that he is just as good if not better than any singer ever. The fact of the matter is that almost no person puts forth the kinda of vocal performance that is on any Barlow-era album.

Ripper knows what he's getting into. Here's a quote from his January 11th interview with Eddie Trunk.

"If I went out and joined somebody like YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. Well, you know what you're getting into — you're not joining a band, you're just joining a project to jump in and sing with him real quick. It's a whole different experience."

I have to say, I find it somewhat odd that Tim would continue to jump from project to project, where he has little control. You would have thought the Iced Earth experience would have soured him on controlling guitar players. I'm guessing Tim was given certain assurances, from Yngwie. And perhaps Yngwie has mellowed a bit. After all, Doogie was in the band for over six years. I'll definitely be interested to see what comes out of this collaboration.

I saw a good explanation in his parting interview from Iced Earth:
"If I went out and joined somebody like YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. Well, you know what you're getting into — you're not joining a band, you're just joining a project to jump in and sing with him real quick. It's a whole different experience. I thought I was getting into a band [with Iced Earth] and I was promised different things, and it all worked out until now. And I think everybody does know that it's the Jon Schaffer thing. It's a revolving door with everybody, and that's a cool thing, and Jon has built this thing from the ground up."

If we're talking in terms of stature, influence and fame, than Barlow is obviously not on the same level as Halford. However, comparing Metal singers of the current day, to those who made their bones in the 80s, is unfair. Barlow didn't have the good fortune of performing when Metal was a commercially viable genre. Now, if we're talking about Barlow's abilities as a frontman and a vocalist, than he belongs on that same level as Halford. This latter grouping, is of course purely subjective. And to that point, having seen both of them perform in their prime, I'd take Barlow... and it's not even close.

I read that as well. But regardless of his mental approach to performing/recording with Yngwie, I'm somewhat surprised he wants to bother. Yngwie's career is clearly on the decline. His playing (to everyone but guitar players, schooled in music theory) has stagnated since the mid-80s. And he's an ego-maniac who hates to allow his singers to actually be front men.

I hope Ripper is prepared to get drowned out by Yngwie's bullshit wankery during his live performances!

 Exactly! Last time I saw Yngwie with Doogie, I couldn't hear one word Doogie sang the entire set. Yngwie's guitar drowned out everything else...along with being painfully loud.:zombie:

I would imagine it was decent enough $ for Ripper to consider it a worthy job/paycheck opportunity for the time being, especially if he's trying to make it on music alone (Beyond Fear isn't going to pay the bills for him). It will give him the opportunity to make some touring money too, especially overseas. Seems Yngwie is changing up his sound a bit according to Doogie as well, whether that's true or not once we hear it who knows.

I dig his playing most up through Odyssey and jumping to Facing the Animal. Alchemy had a couple tunes with flares from the past. I would easily agree that anything recently is (sadly) pretty "repeat mode" playing at best. I don't know how many times you can run through the same scales and fast playing and still expect the devoted fans to keep buying the stuff. I don't even have his last couple.

Have you heard Doogie sing live? :loco: There is a reason Yngwie had to drown him out.:puke:

Yeah, 'cause YM doesn't want anyone to hear anything but him.

Sorry but Doogie's voice was horrible live on anything but the 2 albums he did with Yngwie which he did ok with them. Don;t blame Yngwie for Doogie's voice not being there live.

Venom, Doogie White is a good singer or Yngwie wouldn't have used him. With that said, I'm with Whisper here. Fatesfan and I saw Yngwie on his last tour at a small place in Asheville, NC and you couldn't hear a word Doogie was trying to sing! It all comes down to the fact that there is no planet in our universe big enough to contain Malmsteen's ego. The man makes Blackie Lawless look like an elementary school librarian!

I saw the last tour and heard Doogie perfectly just wish I couldn;t on any of the old stuff. he absolutely BUTCHERED Dreaming(Tell Me)...

this could be real good, i could see this project bringing out a side to both musicians that we normally dont get to see. it could also very well be another boring malmsteen album too. one thing though, i would love to hear what ripper can do in a live setting with some old malmsteen tunes.

i think this is something that no one can truly predict the outcome of, just have to wait and see on this one, but its definitely on my cds to get list.

any release date range given?

Personally, I'm stoked. I've always liked Yngwie's material, but it's mostly because of the vocalists he utilizes.

On another note, has anybody ever heard the first collaboration between Yngwie and Ripper from years back? It was a cover of "Mr. Crowley," recorded for the "Bats Head Soup" tribute to Ozzy. I thought it was one of the better tracks on the disc.
