Okay, so listen up prog metal bands... for those of you around here that don't play rhythm games, Rock Band is arguably the most professional and mature music-based video game around and is a blast to play.
As you might have guessed, the available tracks to play when it comes to prog/power metal are extremely limited, though not terrible. There's a fair sampling of nu-metal and classic rock and hair metal, but only Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, Iron Maiden, Rush, and Children of Bodom would be bands mentioned around these parts on a day-to-day basis.
However, that could change if a lot of the bands around here make use of this new way to market themselves... If I had a prog band, trying to make some extra money and win over new fans, this is the way I would do it hands down.

Most major bands have issues with licensing and rights through their publishers and management when it comes to participating in something like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but from what I have seen, the prog/power metal scene is a lot more fluid and dynamic in terms of rights and management. Most bands own their own music rights and many around here are self-published so participating in uploading their music to a video game is pretty damn inviting if you ask me. Plus, the cost of taking part in this is next to nothing. You just send them the song!

Someone would have to seriously be off their rocker not to do this if you have a good management/publisher that's small enough to work with you as a band on this.

Good luck with it and I look forward to playing the likes of more prog metal around here!

You just made my freaking day. I hadn't heard this news yet. Rock Band is the only game I play anymore. I am going to have to join XNA so I can learn the programming side of it and start helping local bands get their songs published on the Rock Band Network. This is going to be so awesome.

This sweet. If enough prog/power metal bands get in on this... I may go broke.

Prototype and Lacuna Coil had tracks in Guitar Hero III.

Within Temptation has a song available for Guitar Hero: World Tour (as DLC.)

I think this could be really awesome for bands that play our favorite music. The only downside is that they would have to submit the finished coded note charts for their songs, etc.

I think that many bands probably aren't computer savvy enough to do this on their own so they would have to hire someone to do it for them. It could be a really good job opportunity for computer programmers out there - if I could do it I would already be knocking on the doors of Kamelot, Evergrey, Mercenary, Freak Kitchen, and about a gazillion others offering my services.

Yeah, this makes the entire Rock Band platform step up as a major tool for plenty of bands. I'd love to see a lot of the bands we all love embrace this, because the exposure you can get from this platform is significant.

Unfortunately it's one of those things that looks awesome on paper but in reality is a lot harder to make happen than what people would think ...

Since most of the bands we talk about on this forum have signed record deals (and often also publishing deals), where they give away the digital rights to their labels (t.ex the rights for uploading music to iTunes), most of these bands will also not be able to upload music to Rock Band either by themselves.

I can inform you that I've sent out mails to all the record labels the intromental bands work with on this subject, to see what they intend to do about it.

You're definitely right about the existing agreements for many bands adding additional hurdles, but these same hurdles are involved already in the process of bringing songs to the Rock Band platform or to the other music games. Really, the biggest deal here is a lower barrier of entry, which should make it easier for any band to negotiate the process, with record labels or not.

I'm excited.
