running audio back through pre

I agree with Egan, at the old studio we would "reamp" vocals through hardware for compression and such. We had a Radial rackmount DI on the patchbay, with the outboard, and just patched interface output to DI then DI to outboard, then outboard to interface input.

And aren't you able to run a keyboards line out into a DI and into a mic pre? Seems like I've heard that a bunch.

I know Greyskull posted some a/b clips on here of him running a mix through the api 3124 and clipping the digi002 converters. It sounded so much better when he ran through the 3124 and clipped the 002 converters. The mix was super punchy and nice and loud. Anyways maybe he could shed some light on how he ran his mix through the api.

I would like to know becuse im about to buy a 3124 as well.

yeah I'd like to hear how he ran the mix through the API. Especially because the gain knobs aren't stepped so it would be tricky to make sure the L and R channels were exactly equal...

why not just run each side seperately through the same channel and not touch the knob?

Yea you could but it would take twice as long! :p

I remember asking Greyskull the same question about how he kept the volumes the same. He said he just did his best to match the 2 volumes on each channel of the api. Shit sounded bad ass though through the api and clipping the converters. Ive actually ran some mixes of mine through the adl600 (has line ins just for doing this and even shows you how to do in the manual, plus its stepped gain knobs) and clipped my 002 converters a bit and it sounded dope! Little tube mojo on the mix. I got a Rosetta 800 and want to try using those and running a mix back through some preamps (hopefully some api soon)!

was he pushing the API as well?? I used to put it into the red while recording snare and it sounded great... i can see it being really good on a mix.

hello!
As i recall...

and it was AGES ago now, i got a rough level matching the two preamp gains, then for fine tuning, sent a test tone into the pres and monitored the levels with Rn Inspector so they matched.
The Idea came from the manual for the TG2 where it mentions doing something of the sorts, i believe it also mentions trying everything for a different sound, including running through the D.I input as the impedence is different.

I did do this for *ahem* mastering for a bit, but im mostly using Ozone these days, so haven't done it in a while.

I have an ADL, I gotta try that. Anything i need to look out for?

As an aside, the 3124 sounds great when you drive the input but you will probably have to pad the output with a inline attenuator, you can really hear the api mojo this way.

Nope just take a look at the manual if you have any concerns. Its really simple and made so you can run instruments or your mix through the Adl 600. Besides it sounding amazing as a mic pre, thats what really sealed the deal for me about the Adl 600.
