Reminds me of a story one of my professors told today. The first guy who tried to assassinate Franz Ferdinand failed epicly. Wikipedia:

Think exactly how significant those state borders are. Wait a tick, they're completely/almost completely arbitrary, at least with regard to population demographics.

I don't think the Kurd thing can be compared to California. It's not like people from norcal and socal are different ethnic groups that were combined into one country by a colonizing power.
