Sanding your guitar neck for a smoother feel

First of all, Frudua is a pimp. That guy really knows his stuff.

That said, yes, it's a common mod on clear coated maple necks, and we usually lightly go over the back of the neck with 0000 steel wool. Most people don't do it on painted necks because of the drastic color change. Even if you were to buff it back to a glossy finish, it still wouldn't look like it did when it was stock. On top of that, you're going to lose resale value if you ever go to sell it. Is it a good mod? Sure, if you like that kind of feeling. It feels different, so not everyone will dig it. I'd recommend trying it on a cheap guitar before you go and do this to something you really value. Also, if you do this, I recommend looking at how ESP masks off their necks near the body. Try to mimic that angle with painter's tape, as it'll look a bit more professional. Check out back pictures of the ESP M-II NTB to see what I'm referring to.

I tried it once and now it's the first "mod" I do, definitely feels "faster" especially if you get sweaty hands. I totally recommend it, especially if guitars are just work horse tools to you and you're not planning on "collecting" or reselling them .............(or if you don't give them girls names etc)

Say goodbye to the resale value of your guitar.

"This won't damage the finish. A guitar doctor with a buffing wheel can restore the shining in seconds."

It propably wouldnt look the exactly the same, but still..

I like my wood to age. Feels better too. I made this same thread last year and I think the consensus was "if your gonna do it, treat the wood".

My main gtr has a really tick and sticky gloss finish, so I think this mod would do me good, specially for fast and wide fret jumps. Will try it on another first though.
Thanks for the reference RedDog ;) couldn't find any other threads even though I knew I saw this topic mentioned before, that Sneap search really lacks sometimes. Going to put up yours here just for reference.

I'm going to be buried/cremated with Maleficent - that's her name
But yeah guitars are tools to me too, the more character, the better.

Planning to do just some satin finish, see how it goes from there. Sounds easier, AND safer.
