Sansamp PSA impulses

What do you guys generally think about the Sansamp PSA?

I got Sansamp PSA-1 right here, a former guitarist of my other band just left it behind when he picked up all of his other stuff, not really sure if he's going to want it back anyway... So I put it in my rack.

What's it useful for? I haven't tried that impulse to bypass the internal cab (thanks for that by the way) but I did fool around with it, didn't really like the tones I was getting. Would it be good as a preamp or something like that?

sansamp PSA fucking rules ,an both for guitar and bass.it totally depends on how you use it
andy and colin use it frequently for bass along with other famous producers.
for guitars, peter tagtgren used it really often and created amazing guitar tones.
i think it's amazing product in a very good price for the quality that it delivers.

Own one for about ten years, main preamp on my guitar rack, sometimes bored, sometimes amazed...

I can achieve really great lead tones, but clean sound is so so and rhythm tone can be hard to dial.

Will post some samples (miced with custom 2x12 cab with EVM12L) later...

-edit- here it is:

-Just in case, drums suck, everything was made back in 2004 with Playstation One (yes, the first one from 1995) software called "Music 2000" (or MTV Music Generator in North America)-

In addition, it was my first mixing stuffs, so everything is not well balanced, sorry for that, just focus on guitar tone, this is the topic !

(Guitar used at that time was a RG270 with Super Distortion on bridge and Air Norton on neck)

Sometimes, like on "Funky Street", there is this shitty midi bass, you are warned ^^

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/Devil From Inside (guest Julien Rost & Lilou).mp3 (one of the best tone I managed to get, I think, both for rhythm and leads)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/the 7 Minutes Thrash_v.1.2_Rico_mix.mp3 (good as well)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/Thrashy remix.mp3 (old school thrash à la Annihilator, good)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/Death.mp3 (guitar tone is so so, music is death metal cliché between Cannibal Corpse and slow Suffocation)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/Californian Boogie remix.mp3 (instrumental stuff like Vai or Satriani...)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Old/Funky Street remix.mp3 (instrumental groovy stuff like Greg Howe, Bettencourt funky stuff, shitty midi bass ^^)

So, what do you think anyway ? most of the time it was miced with a borrowed SM57 through some digital 4-track boss stuff, didn't use any computer at that time (except PS1 for all the midi stuffs)

-edit 2- Oups, I almost forgot, here is a recent project, first example with miced cab (same gear as above, except drums made with Metal Foundry and Reaper as DAW): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Metal/Majesty miced 0.2.mp3

Same stuff, lot longer, with amp sims, impulses, nothing was miced: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Metal/Majesty 0.2.mp3

And a last example, recent one too, a song from a friend (black/death stuff), miced guitar, same gear as above (kick is WAY too loud, I know): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2816078/Zic/Metal/JeffTriple Mark III_Rythm.mp3

Do you think it is worthy enough to go on micing with this gear ?

I've had a PSA1 for a few years. If I'm not mistaken, that uncab impulse was posted on guitarampmodelling.com after I went crying there that the pSA1 had the worst cabinet emulation in the history of mankind with a preamp tone to die for!!

However, I found that even with the uncab impulse, it didn't really sound that great in a mix - always too buzzy and a little far back to be too usable. Used it on two albums, and even though it sounded really organic, it wasn't a great guitar tone on record. Or I probably didn't know enough back then :)

On the bass, this thing is a completely different monster though!!!! Like WOW! I love it! The way the distortion knobs are designed, it just works amazingly well for a bass tone, and I would recommend this over anything for a bass!

However, I recently got an Axe fx ultra, and since then I've been looking to sell the psa1. I wouldn't sell it if I wasn't so damned broke! It's (now) a fairly rare and vintage piece of gear that's great at some of the things it does. The only interested folks till now are bassists - and that's the only folks I'd really recommend this to anyway! I tried plugging it into the fx return of an amp once too - the results were too boomy and glassy sounding because of the HPF/LPF variety speaker "sim" on this thing. If there was some way to remove the speaker emulation, I would never trade this in! It's a stellar piece of gear just completely ruined for guitars because of a stupid design decision! I believe alot of the new sansamp products are coming out with an option to bypass the cab sim by way of an "amp/line" switch. Wish this had one as well :(

If you listen to the first few clips, they're spot on references WRT the whole "double speaker sim" problem! Glassy, slightly far back and extremely attenuated high mids. A lot of people dig this sound, but it's not for me :)

I understand what you mean, I think it is because I used my custom cab with EVM-12L inside, which are not full of high mids like V30 for example.

Anyway, it would be cool if UMF users could tell what they think of my miced sound, apart from the whole mix and everything else (my early years !)

Thanks
