I haven't heard a lot of legitimately scary songs. I'm not talking about music from soundtracks because stuff from horror movies and games can be pretty eerie but its really because you're attached to a certain scene from the movie/game (see: Lavander Town from Pokémon). Even in metal which is supposed to be a darker (hence more prone to being 'scary') genre of music, I tend to hear people trying to sound badass moreso than terrifying.

Keep in mind I don't listen too much to Black or Doom metal, though if they're good I can enjoy them. Most of the time when a listen to a Black metal band trying to sound frightening, they end up trying too hard and just become silly.

Probably the most unnervingly creepy albums I've listened to were Leprosy by Death and Beyond the Gates by Possessed, both in the death metal scene and both pretty early works in the genre.

I want to listen to something along those lines but I don't really know where to look for it. I really feel its been a missed opportunity for a lot of bands to not try something along these lines... or maybe I'm just an uneducated moron and there's a lot of horrific bone-chilling music out there and I just haven't heard it...

It's pretty subjective what one finds scary. I think that Carach Angren - And The Consequence Macabre is pretty scary, but that's not really in line with the bands you named.

Here is some of my favs.

Maybe I should have clarified, scary, for me would be something eerie and bone-chilling that would leave me with an unconfortable feeling after. It has to be good too. :) Thanks for the suggestion. Not really too scary to me (the symphonic elements kinda detract from it) but it was pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions! As I said, I tend to be more 'scared' by slower, more "sick-type" melodies and eerie songs rather than loud "boo i'm a dead corpse and im coming to eat your sooul blaaagh!" type stuff. If that makes any sense.

:err:

This is pretty scary. I mean, I crapped myself to Mars when I listened to this.

Oh fuck...

Those are about as close as I can think. Atmospheric maybe. Music isn't really scary, just tends to give me chills or paints a very strange image (more the second song).
The first song is fantastic regardless, recommend giving it a go all the way through.

Couldn't think of a single piece of metal, but i'll keep trying.

I do love to see a bit of My Dying Bride love :)

I always thought this track had a really cool, 'eerie' riff ...
