Science help - genetics

well i mean some people are retarded from brain damage/drug/alcohol abuse, others because of genetic/autoimmune disorders which obviously can be passed on (but aren't always), or there are things like autism which have no known cause, or down syndrome which seems to have environmental causes which lead to three #21 chromosomes (most of these people never reach sexual maturity anyway)... and the list goes on.
and then there are just stupid people. and i am sure problem solving capacity is somehow genetic according to some dipshit somewhere.

i have a second cousin who is retarded and her husband is also retarded (he has d.s. she has FAS) and they have two 'normal' kids.

I think I forgot to mention it to him. We were talking about this one time in the fifth grade when (coincidentally) a retarded kid drank water out of the back of a urinal and then spit it on my friend. And then I got in the shower, and I guess that jackass didn't look at the board. Though I'm assuming he did get dressed at some point before going to class.

Depends. Most instances of retardation are from an abnormal pregnancy or early upbringing I imagine. If the quality was genetically linked, then inheritance would be certain barring some totally random mutations (assuming both parents had the same "retard" gene and it was recessive).

Stupidity on the other hand could *possibly* be inherited. But we probably shouldn't discuss that, as it could yield some racialist related argument (as has happened in the past).

I whole-heartedly back minx's opinion, except for the assertion that she implies at the end that problem solving capability should not be genetic. On a molecular level, there might be slight mutations that don't change protein shape according the hydropathy, rendering them totally worthless, hence retarded, but some of the specialized proteins in the brain might have slightly different affinity values (k-max, that type stuff, for those who understand) that slightly reduce nerve conduction velocity due to mutations in the opening of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and elsewhere. Its possible but do you really want to blame genetics for everything?

that was my point, i sort of feel like blaming genetics is the new psychoanalysis as far as the 'cause' of everything people dislike about themselves and everyone else.

Minxnim, if you are looking for something interesting to read in that regard, check out Genome by Matt Ridley. It has some rather astonishing little snippets and examples in it of genetics used the wrong way and an explanation of why as well a lot of things I didn't know before hand. Well written too, the writing style is just very engaging.

Seriously? I've not met anyone who has read it besides myself, I can't believe the thing about cholesterol and violent deaths.

you're talking about the 'autobiography of a species' book thingie right? just want to make sure i am really thinking of the same thing.
