screams > growls

Don't be a scene kid, DW. Screams are american children's way to try and compensate for their lack of balls and vocal ability. Give me a break. The closest thing I'll ever accept are black metal screeches or nasal growling which sounds fucking cool.

Ackerfeldt is my favorite growler, probably. I really like his depth.

However, I'll take Peter Tatgtrtetnttttt's screams any day, although I also like his growls.

"Roswell FORTY-SEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNN!!!!!!!"

And of course, the awesome Fractured Millennium:

Depends. I really like Mikko from Deathspell Omega who is kind of halfway between the two:

But in general I'm not picky about vocals. I mean cmon, its people screamin' and growlin', just headbang and enjoy the music!

Yeah screams to me aren't like screamo type bands who basically shout hardcore lyrics in a really annoying high pitched way. Screaming to me is like clean singing but using a bit of your throat and just a tad gutteral. The really, really long screams like Hypocrisy are what I like. In fact, I pretty much scream in Skylab similar to Tatgren. I don't have quite the high range he does but the same timbre.

I call it screaming with vibrato.

DW, the way you describe it, bands like Maiden and Priest would be considered "screaming". I consider Trivium, Thrice, All that Remains as screaming aka vocal shitflingingintotheear.

well what would you consider the Converge dude's vocals? sounds like hes screaming his fuckin lungs out to me

sounds different on youtube than album, but i think you can get the idea

That sounds more like screeching to me. Those vocals sound really interesting too, imo. Reminds me a bit of the high side of Glen Benton, or Peste Noir:

Well, I posted 3 examples to support my statement. Guess that wasn't enough.

There's some growling in this one, but the screaming is basically what I'm talking about. Starting at 3:23.

Man I love Akercocke.

But you know what? I guess my drummer's vocals are kinda really closer to my thing...better to send you straight there. Listen to "Towards the Remote Future". I'm singing now but it's really similar, although I'm a little less Dani Filth circa 1996 than he is.
