Screw caution...

so Glenn has signed on Opeth !!??!?

Good guess I think. Glen obviously looking ways to create fast ticket sell out. Headliners infloence ticket sales the most. Opeth would almost guarantee that extra kick Glen needs on ticket sales. If they can agree on the terms, it would be no brainer.

You think people would pay $120 for a ticket just to see Opeth when they can wait 6 months and catch them on a headlining tour for $20?

Nope. I don't believe any headliner will have that much influence unless one of their members name is Arjen.

What I do believe is that if someone is on the fence about the rest of the roster, the decision to go will be heavily influenced by the headliner choice. The better the headliner, the easier the decision.

Opeth isn't a band where the majority of their fanbase is comprised of people who'd attend this fest, though. They're one of those bands like Cradle of Filth and Lamb of God who have a large "non-metalhead" fanbase. So the average person who goes to an Opeth show and would be willing to pay to see them wouldn't really be interested in coming to ProgPower because it's not the kind of music they listen to. Headliners are obviously important, but I don't think that Opeth's the kind of band that would really make ticket sales skyrocket, unless they're performing a special set where diehard Opeth fans from all over the country would fly in.

I assume he means Arjen Lucassen.

Hard to say what kind of draw it would be, considering his bands aren't exactly tearing up the charts in the States.

Opeth certainly fits musically, but tour enough where that wouldn't really be a deciding factor.
Sorry, but that's the risk with any regularly touring headliner.

You are correct about his bands not tearing it up on US charts, but there are enough fans of his stuff that would come to the fest in a heartbeat since he has never been here, not to mention the guy hardly tours period, so there would be some that would come overseas I'm guessing as well.

Yeah but outside of last year's headliners, both IX and this coming year are made up of bands who headline the states.

In all honesty, I think the major draw for this fest is seeing the non-headliner bands since they typically are once in a lifetime shots at seeing them. I know that's the case for me. Headliners I honestly don't think impact people buying tickets that much. The only thing they do is what Glenn said, get someone over the hump if they're on the fence.

I am a similar way. It's almost always the low and mid slotted bands that sell me the ticket. I did go for FW last year but that's the only one I went strictly due to the headliner. This year is back to me being most excited for the low & mid bands on both days.

Good list but how is MDB right for the fest and Candlemass isn't? We've discussed this before, and I think Candlemass would do extremely well at Progpower. I also think that after DSO, Unexpect would do well. Katatonia? They could do it as well, though I don't see it.

You misunderstand my post. The second list I posted are bands that I *do* believe would do well here, and would fit the "oddball" description because they are "off the beaten path of PPUSA." In other words, Candlemass IS right for this fest. And any fest. Ever.

If My Dying Bride is on the bill I'm stealing all of the pillowcases people use to save seats, building a nest, and taking a nap. I love me some MDB, but I can't think of a less exciting live performance.

I'm still hoping for Body Count.

Ha! I've got that CD laying around here somewhere. The original version before they took Cop Killer off of it. That one is not in the rotation and haven't listened to it in about 15 years :Smokedev:
