Minke, Sperm, Fin and Sei, which are the species that the japanese hunt, aren´t even close to the point of extinction. These fuckers are complete liers. Just like when Paul Watson said that he was shot by the japanese but on reality he was hit by a flashbang and was even with bulletproof vest.
they're not now because ther's an international moratory since 1986 (almost 25 years ago) that say it's illegal because genetic researchs and studying the korean/japanese habits of eating them would have take them down completely in a few years. But they're being heavily protected in many ways 40 years ago.
Who can assure you this won't happen again ?? because if Norway, Iceland, Korea, Tuvalu, Mauritania, Suriname, Ivory Coast etc, etc.. start doing it again because of your reasonings, I can assure you we'll be seeing less and less whales. It's is a very delicate ecosystem and they contribute a lot on it in many different ways.
Only one population, the East Pacific grey whale, is thought to have recovered to its original abundance, but the closely related West Pacific grey whale population is the most endangered in the world. It hovers on the edge of extinction with just over 100 remaining.
Anyway, this kind of cultural killings make me sick. It's like tiger bone powder, rhino horn extract and all those unnnecessary slaughters of exotic animals that are in DANGER of extinction.
There's only one region in Russia that depends on whales to survive. Should we be worried about it? don't think so. but we well know this is a cultural (MONEY) thing and you cannot hold the argument of the pigs and cows. Man, cows and pigs DOES NOT HAVE an ecosystem function/interaction directly. Don't you think they are protected for something more than being big beautiful animals?
It's still uncertain that they will completely recover because of the contamination, the marine traffic, the whale smuggling, entanglement in debris and fishing gear, chemical and noise pollution and global warming put the long-term survival of these animals at risk.
If Japan succeeds, this meeting will mark the first time an international convention has been hijacked by a single country and could lead to treaty-busting in other international conventions.
