I was rummaging about at the local CD Warehouse here in Jacksonville FL awhile back and came across a band called Sentenced. I said what the fuck, and put the cd in the store's player to try them out...

(Up until that moment in my life, the only other music that I listened to that had any "growlings" was Pantera.)

Well...that cd took me by suprise and so I bought it. The title of it was Amok. I would have to say that is how I eventually got into Opeth...my mind became more opened and I sought out more unusual styles of prog/death/ or whatever you want to call it...metal.

Yup, Sentenced was once great - Amok and Love & Death are very important albums for me as well. However, their path turned downwards after Taneli Jarva left the band and Crimson (hey, I haven't heard an album-title like that ever before, how original...) is only a mediocre metal-album.

And remember to check out The Black League - the new band of Taneli Jarva and one of best bands in the world at the moment (just after Opeth and Dark Tranquillity)!

Sentenced is a great band, I heard of them by their music video "Killing Me Killing You" and bought the album, it is quite good. The Black League is amazing, isn't their new album coming out in the next few days?

I first heard Sentenced when ' Crimson' came out and then got hold of some of the earlier releases. I agree, 'Killing you, killing me' is good, and so is 'No more beating as one' on 'Crimson'.

Of the earlier albums 'Frozen' is pretty good, and so is 'Down', but overall I think their albums are a bit patchy in coming up with a memorable song. I'm not sure for how long they can sing about suicide without actually doing it one day though!

Just wait for their next album...according to their site one song will be called 'Excuse Me While I Kill Myself' :D

I had Frozen and I really liked it. Then Crimson came out and someone told me it was great, but I wans't too impressed. Sure, a few songs were cool, but overall, it was kinda bland I thought.

Better than Jag Panzer though...
*shakes his head*
...I can't believe anyone listens to them...

Frozen is great, it's got some killer leads in it. Crimson has a few good songs, but overall I find it boring. It's also not very well mixed, the lead-guitar-copying-the-vocal-line thing doesn't come across as well as in the past, the guitars are too low in the mix.

North From Here is utterly stunning though. I can't understand how the band can bare to play such middle-of-the-road stuff now, when they used to be so ultra-technical. As a guitarist, that stuff would drive me nuts, I'd be dying to cut a massive speed-riff

To Oyo, yes I live in Jax, stationed at the Naval Air Station.

To everyone - thanks for the info, so if I enjoy Amok, what would be my second pick? The earlier stuff or the newer stuff, seems like the earlier stuff to me.

And how about that female singer in the background, I love her voice.

Well a lot of guys, say Sentenced without Taneli Jarva sucks, and others say the oposite..

i say SENTENCED RULES!!

yes it is in fact a very diferent sound, but hey they change it and its good, i preferd it than they would sick to play like before without him, since he was the man for that sound and he alone, (if you dont beleive me listen to Black League).

The new stuff from sentenced, Down, Frozen, CRimson, its in fact a lot softer, but its still heavy and good, personally i love the style of theyre guitars, theyre just to damn fine.. and the vocals are great Ville laihala is a great singer, just bear with the fact that its another singer and just that..

Crimson rocks, once you get into the mood, you identify with the lyrics, and the depressive atmosfere is great..

well some like it some not.. thats life, but you got to admit that theyre great albums from a very great band.. i just hope they come to Mexico one day..

Actually, the stuff BEFORE Amok is much harsher and technical, whereas all the three full-length albums after Amok (Down, Frozen, Crimson) are very melodic and not too heavy. They are still quite good, but not even nearly as good as Amok (yes, Noose, Dead Leaves and Broken are all great songs, but those albums have too much "filler-songs").

Well you could say that about the fill songs, but i dont cause like i tell you before its all conceptual and you need to get into it, either way its ok not a tottally diferenr style, but its indeed diferent, amok is a great album but like all the rest it has good songs and boring songs, i almost got sleep with funeral spring, for instance, it all lies on the eyes of the beholder.

I've only heard a couple of their songs one of which was 'Killing Me Killing You' and that put me right off them. Sounded terrible.

Just bumped this ancient thread to say that Sentenced is one of the most horrible bands ever

i can see why you say that...and i probably would have said the same if i had heard them this time around. but my first encounter with the band dates back 7 years. i was blown away when i had first heard crimson.

these days i listen to this band only for the lead guitars as someone else have mentioned above. they have come up with some great guitar melodies, no one can deny that.

and try the song "luxury of a grave" from the cold white light. some great finnish humor there!

I really like the bands older death metal albums and also amok. North From Here is one of the most interesting death metal albums and is probably pushing bounderies for 93.
