I'm listening to Cryptopsy right now and I'm like :err: . What the fuck is going on here. Beyond the complexity and brutality, it just seems...totally random.

What's your take on this band?

They combine killer song writing with brutality, technicallity, and a degree of insane musicianship beyond most death/grind bands. But if your not a big death/grind fan I cant see you really liking them.

You know, even before I came into this thread I knew you were going to say "LOL BUT YOU LIKE IMPERIAL CRYSTALLINE ENTOMBMENT" or something. :(

I've been drawn into Cryptopsy by the whole fuss around their drummer being an octopus. They kick some serious ass in a cold-blooded professional kind of way, but when I need some death/grind I tend to go for the more groovy stuff like Circle of Dead Children, Nasum...

I do agree that their latest offerings have been way too technical and over-the-top. However, their debut album "Blasphemy Made Flesh" is pure death metal gold - groovy and full of excellent riffs. "None So Vile" is almost as good. Check those out instead.

After reading a review, that just gushed on and on about how amazing "Once Was Not" is, I downloaded it. I didn't even make it through the first song. Sounded like chaotic, over the top crap to me.

Zod

cryptopsy slays. try seeing them live. insane musicianship. i agree with the perceived "randomness" of once was not but it grows on you. it did me anyway. i love that album. if you want non-random (?) death metal, listen to some nile. both bands fucking rule

None So Vile should be heard before any judgement is passed. That album may be technical, but it's also groovy as feck, which is the key ingredient to most DM. Listen to "Slit Your Guts", that song is a perfect example of why Cryptopsy is a good band. Especially from 1:50 to 2:30, that passage has the headbanging grooves and the awesomely fun(ky) bass work that makes the album such a draw to me.

Two thumbs up.
