(I think that's the order. If it's not, I'll fix it eventually.)
I put over 700 miles on my car roundtrip to get to this show. It was pretty awesome. I met up with Buddy, Buddy's girl, and Lord Lindsey before the show. We got to the venue and eventually met up with Thra
ude and his friend emtfhII. This guy outside told us he traveled to Chicago from Texas and just happened to notice Anthrax was playing near where he was staying. What luck! Inside I met remington69 and her less attractive half (kidding). I probably looked like an asshole because as soon as I was introduced I ran away to check out the opening band, who was covering "Made in Hell" by Halford. I didn't mean to be an ass; I just got to show some respect to a band covering a Halford song. They closed their set with a good version of "Hallowed Be Thy Name." (Rule #1 of being a local metal band opening for a national metal act: you can never go wrong with covering a song from the first five Maiden albums. Well, except for the two songs on PoM that stink.) Anyone remember their name?
Anthrax tore shit up. They played "Any Place But Here" for the first time live, and it was awesome. I'm not even a huge fan of the song like others here are, but it gave me chills how awesome it is. They played "Keep it in the Family," which has been a recent edition to the set. It's obvious Scott absolutely loves this song. I'm happy for him. It was nice to see something different. Another treat was "Random Acts" which I don't think they've played since the Volume 8 tour. (I could be wrong. Can't you see I'm only human?) I thought Charlie's drum intro really got the place stomping. Charlie also especially ruled on "Any Place But Here." I just need to hear "CADILLAC ROCK BOX" a few more times.
The guys left the stage after "Indians" like that was REALLY their final song, but the fans shouted for more, so they came back to do "Bring the Noise." (Besides, an 80 minute set with 3 minutes of intro music is unacceptable. So it became an 85 minute set with 3 minutes of intro music.) Some guy shouted out for "Lone Justice" before they played "Bring the Noise." Scott said they did play it in Cleveland last December. The guy said to play it in Chicago. Scott's only excuse for not playing it was that it's not in their repertoire. Damn Frank leaving situation!
Joey Vera did a great job. I'll be honest. I hope Frank comes back. But Joey is a great performer. He has had to learn a ton of songs in a short amount of time. It's obvious he's trying to find his place in the band and not step on anyone's toes. (literally and figuratively) Now he knows two "Madhouse" songs. If Anthrax doesn't find a new bass player by the time they are ready to record a new album OR get back with Frank, then I think Joey would be great. Fuck all the naysayers. (not the people who like Frank, but the people who hate Joey. There aren't really that many of them, but they all post on a metal news site that starts with B, end with H, and has "labbermout" in the middle.)
I've been thinking lately how much I want a "good" live copy of Armored Saint's "You're Never Alone." I have an audio bootleg from the Revelation tour, but I can barely hear the vocals. There's a bonus feature on the Trip Thru Red Times DVD, but John's mic dies at the beginning. Anyway, on my way back to Columbus, OH from Chicago, I decided to stop in Dayton at this used record store I used to patronize while I attended the University of Dayton, called Second Time Around. Well, they had the Metal Blade Records 20th Anniversary Party DVD+CD, and the CD has "You're Never Alone." I'm so thrilled. It also has a kickass live version of "Unstable" from Nod to the Old School. There's some stuff from Engine, Joey Vera's band, too.
Well, that's it from me.
P.S. For those keeping score, Scott took over Frank's vocal parts in "Bring the Noise."
P.P.S. The bonus live CD that comes with the new Armored Saint DVD is totally kickass. It's only 6 songs, but it's worth the price of the DVD. I asked John if there would be one Armored Saint release every year. He laughed and said they're running out of stuff.
P.P.P.S. Metal Maiden is my new fashion consultant.
P.P.P.P.S. 69 cent fountain drinks from Speedway are also totally kickass. With Mountain Dew at least. And what a great number.
