Should I trade my 5150 combo for an XXX? (head)

Title.

Been reading alot about the XXX, and it seems if I slapped some JJ EL84's in that motherfucker, it'd scream.

Really digging the active EQ too, opens up alot of tone options.

Depends on what sound you're shooting for. I, personally, prefer the XXX's mid voicing and it's a much more flexible amp. It's voiced a bit closer to a Rectifier.

So, I'd say yes.

Yeah man, personally I prefer the mesa-esque tone over a 5150's tone,

It's all based on personal preference but based on what I'm reading/seeing on this amp, it seems like this thing would put out some absolutely devastatingly crushing fucking tone.

The more I play my 5150 though, the more I want to keep it

I would stay with the 5150. One thing I have noticed is and I say this only in my own personal experience is that xxx's seem to have a big feedback issue. But like I said thats only my personal experience.

From what I've seen from everybody's x, the XXX can sound like a 5150, but the 5150 can't sound like a XXX, although in my experience with my XXX, I can't get it sounding 5150-ish, but that could be down to my shitty pickups and a 75 loaded cab instead of V30's.

I wouldn't know about the feedback issue, as my XXX hasn't been used above bedroom levels.

Yeah, I've never heard a clip of a XXX that sounded much like a Recto to me - the 5150, JSX, and XXX all offer different flavors of the Peavey sound IMO, perhaps people just think the XXX is like a Recto cuz it has a metal grille :loco:

I was playing one at guitar center the other day through a recto cab, i noticed it had qualities that my recto had that i liked. It also had some of the signature peavey gain that i also liked.. so imagine kinda in between a 5150 and a Recto but not quite as good as the recto..imo at least. It was still bad ass though and i would totally get on for the price if i didnt have my rec already :)

It doesn't sound like a Recto, but its mid voicing is definitely more towards the lower mids, which is why I prefer it over the 5150. It's the most Recto-ish sounding of all the Peavey amps is what I'm getting at.

To be honest, I've never liked my XXX. It's pretty solid but as far as live clarity, it's just never done it for me. If you're looking for a recording amp, maybe thats what it is more suited for.

XXX does not sound like a 5150. Similarities, but not the same, not by a long shot. And it's not a rectifier either. But it is fucking awesome.

This.

I have owned a XXX and I now own a 5150.

I love both.

You obviously both didn't see the post a while back that everybody's x made where he dialled in the XXX to sound the same as his 5150 and most people couldn't tell much difference. I'll try and dig up the thread, though the clips no longer work, and I'm not sure if everybody's x still has those clips.
