Should I trade my 5150 combo for an XXX? (head)

I think he was referencing the link to the sound clip, not the post :)

Reading FTW!

You obviously both didn't see the post a while back that everybody's x made where he dialled in the XXX to sound the same as his 5150 and most people couldn't tell much difference. I'll try and dig up the thread, though the clips no longer work, and I'm not sure if everybody's x still has those clips.

There you go, post 7 onwards.

COBHC, I don't think this means the same thing as "they sound the same." Play them side by side, it's not even close (well okay, maybe closer than most amps) but they really don't sound alike. Try to get Exodus' tone with 5150, not going to happen. Try to get In Flames-like sound with XXX, not going to happen.

Under a mic they might be able to sound similar, but when I stand in front of them I can "feel" the difference, as retarded as that sounds.

Not retarded at all Krispies. I find the same thing.

A month back, I borrowed a mates mesa triple rec and put it up against my 5150,XXX and 6505+. These are the things I found;

5150- basically 1 sound, sharp and articulate with great amount of gain on tap.
XXX- most versatile out of the 3. Has the most thick sounding chunk and rythm sound of the 3.
Mesa- not as good as the 5150 in the attack department and not as good as the XXX in the thick department. Though I will say, the mesa had this nice professional sounding bottom end, all be it a bit flabby.

Here in Oz, you can get a 5150,XXX, a mesa cab, a sm57 and a slab of piss for the same price as a brand new rectifier here. I know what I would rather.

Can I get a rectifier sound from my XXX, not exactly, but it's close and more versatile. I honestly don't chase the rec tone from my XXX as the rec didn't cut it for metal. With a maxon 808 in front of it, chunked it up, but the peaveys just kicked it in the metal department.

The XXX is fitted with JJ el34s, the 5150 with ruby 6l6s. The mesa with mesa tubes 6l6s.

So yeah, grab a XXX, some JJ el34s and grind on!

Oh, and before you chime in Marcus, I tried and tried and tried to dial the rec in and meh! I know you told me that they can be fiddly bastards to dial in, but there are only so many knobs and modes, did the math thing, tried near on 200+ different combinations, 20+ hours and overall in both live and recorded situations didn't cut it.:heh:

Know what the great thing is?

When I got it, it already had JJ power/pre's :D:D:D

I never said you could get a 5150 sounding like a XXX. As 006 said READING FTW! I said you could get a XXX sounding pretty similar to a 5150, but not the other way around.

Hahahahaha! I'm confused!lol!

So I have a XXX dialed in to yadyadyada and it sounds close to my 5150.
So I guess that means when I play my 5150 it sounds close to my XXX.:heh:

No, like...yes, if the XXX is dialed to sound like a 5150 then yes...the 5150 can sound like a XXX. But that is taking it too literally.

Try getting the typical XXX sound with a 5150, can't do it. But you can dial a XXX real close to the typical 5150 sound. Kinda like how my JSX always sounded polished and I couldn't get a raw sound from it - but with a more raw amp, like a XXX, it can be worked with until it's polished sounding... Understand now? :)

Steve: I get ya!

When you say Typical XXX sound, do you mean all knobs at 12.00 position?
