Yes and no, I can promise a good reco from myself, but I will most likely listen to about half and enjoy a few. Then again, if I find even one awesome band all is worth it. Someone needs to take on the duties as the arranger dude as well.
I'll read all reco threads and somehow learn something from them anyway.

I would say yes provided the vast majority of reco's were metal based. I'm irritated that it took so long to discover Alcest, for example, when this forum was chatting about favorite vegetables. I feel like there's some catching up to do with all the good stuff that's out there.

So in the meantime, my choice for loving sorath is the only way to go.

Maybe a nice big thread formulating the rules would be a nice place to start?

Something like:

a) Narrative descriptions are compulsory
b) Samples are compulsory
c) background information on the band is compulsory to some degree (They are from this era, playing this kind of music, sound a bit like x with lots of y and less z)
d) recos must be metal or VERY closely related to it

Hell yes. In our first round, I discovered Shining IV and Klabautamann's "Der Ortt". In our second round, I sense that people tried to find something as obscure as possible without regard for whether it was any good or not. Or maybe not.

It would be interesting to see how many people have gone out and bought an album based on our two rounds of recommendation projects.

I suppose that would be me. I'd be stickying and un-stickying as well. That is, if we decide to do it again. So far, I love Sorath is winning.

You make a good point, because actually a number of people on the forum have been pushing Alcest ever since the release of Le Secret, but clearly this has been lost on some when it's not done in an official recommendation thread but instead within a thread about French black metal or whatever.

So I say yes, as long as people only recommend stuff that the forum on the whole are actually going to enjoy.

Sounds good. I dug up the very original thread starter way back when....look see:

An experiment....

First of all, I'm going to unstick the RC must have list and NY/NJ shows threads. We can search for them as and when right?

Here's what I'm suggesting, and it includes every RC regular:

Each week, three of us will take turns in starting a thread on a new band recommendation. Actually, it doesn't have to be a new band, just a band you like and think more people should check them out.

If possible, include a URL, a yousendit sample, and a brief description as to why you think the band should be checked out.

I'll STICK those 3 threads for 7 days, afterwhich they will be unstuck and replaced by the next trio of RC regular recommendations.

We can start a roster and just cycle through it. If you don't have anything to recommend, we can skip to the next person in the roster cycle.

From what I understand, some of us attempt to do this but the threads go ignored or buried in spam bullshit threads, so this way I'll stick them and we can all check out "The Band of the Week", etc.

I think this is the proper use of sticking threads.

Vote.

How does that sound?

And here's the thread if anyone's interested. Hmm, that thread was started in Jan '06. Is it me or doesn't it seem like it's been longer?

another reason is that ive literally run out of bands to check out...or im just getting lazy trying to save up for an Xbox 360

J's rule: No Doom!

Interesting...in the first poll, the following 34 people said yes to a recommendations thread idea:

Birkenau, Chromatose, circus_brimstone, Claws of Perdition, Conspicuously Absent, Crimson Velvet, cthulufhtagn, Demilich, Demonspell, Dev, Dick Sirloin, Doomcifer, Ellestin, En Vind Av Sorg, fotmbm, General Zod, Henrik Main, J., JayKeeley, lurch70, MadeInNewJersey, MajestikMøøse, man as robot, NADatar, Nate The Great, neal, Night Mare, Reign in Acai, Russell, Sadguru, spikes77, Thanatopsis123, Tranquillian, who? Gridlock?

The following three people said NO!

Hamock, Nichrome, Tila Tequila

Tila said no.

Yes, I'm automatically in favor of anything that promotes musical discussion, but consideration should be given to the fact that if it were to be strictly metal, it may become more difficult to locate bands that the majority of the forum is unfamiliar with...maybe not given the tendency for recommendations buried in huge threads to get ignored.
