Just picked one up today.... VERY cool mic for the price. For male vocals, it seems a nice counterpoint to a cheap condensor. I'm curious if anyone else on here is using one & which settings you prefer?

Don't have one of my own yet, but from alllllll the countless reviews and just great comments in general I definitely have one on my list of future gear. What else have you tried it on so far?

I just got it & tried it out on my own voice. "Smooth" is a bit of an understatement. I think this would be the perfect mic for death metal screaming.

Indeed it would be, It was used for some of the vocals on the new lamb of god cd.

BTW, thanx for the drums thread, it was really interesting.

From my experience it is a great mic for hard vocals - and lets face it when you listen to some of the best vocals out there you tend to be listening to an sm7b. Its the choice for people like Colin Richardson and Rick Rubin, and they aint done all that bad have they! I've used it with a guy who is sooooo loud he can make wind in your ears from 10 feet and can sing or scream and it was perfect. Definately on my list - one for vocals and one for guitars. Good choice.

as i've mentioned before in these pages, i used an SM7 for Mike Kameron's vocals on the DAATH album i engineered and mixed for Roadrunner which is coming out in Feb. all of the DAATH tracks any of you have heard that i've posted up here were all done with SM 7 on vox. Andy turned me on to the mic while i was at his place during the Nevermore "TGE" sessions.

I'm also planning on getting one. This might be a stupid question, but how well would it handle vocals live?
The question would be the opposite, "how would a singer handle that microphone live?"

unless your playing massive venues and earning thousands a night would you really wanna use a £300 mic in a live situation with a slobbering and sometimes drunk idiot 'singing' into it.

I wouldn't want to use it live. unless it was their mic - then hell yeah - if it aint mine I dont give a fuck

Do you find yourself using the rolloff or the presence boost?

How is this for clean vocals?

It works pretty damn well with clean vocals. Some well-known SM7 users: SOAD, Mike Patton, Metallica...

One thing it doesn't work very well is group vocals. They always end up sounding small. Even a cheap condenser sounds better. IMO.
