"It was a musical phenomenon that puzzled serious music fans and supposedly hip music critics for a decade. How could a movement where boys liked to daub their faces in their sister's make-up, and dress up in lurid lyrca tights and frilly shirts possibly be taken seriously? GLAM METAL, SLEAZE METAL, COCK ROCK, BIG HAIR ROCK; call it what you will, because these boys have been called worse - gypsies, tramps and thieves. These leather boyz with electric toyz were burning the candle at both ends when everyone else was still burning joss sticks!".
So states the opening paragraph of the linernotes to this giddy collection of GLAM METAL anthems from that decade of excess, the 1980s. Of course, the whole point of GLAM METAL was that the music was all about teen rebellion, gender bending, chasin' ladies, round-the-clock kicks and, above all, sheer fun. It was a time when boys adopted girl's names (just sample Vikki Foxx, Tracii Guns, Mandy Lion and Rachel Bolan), or even took the art of ridiculously misspelt stage names to a new level (anyone for Nikki Sixx, Taime Downe or Rikki Rockett?). It didn't matter what the critics thought, GLAM METAL paved its own way by making an indelible impact in the clubs and, more importantly, on the charts.
Taking inspiration from the original 1970s glam heroes like Marc Bolan, the Sweet, Slade and theNew York Dolls, plus those outrageous rock'n'roll outlaws Aerosmith, GLAM METAL (1980s style) had its birth in the seedy nightclubs that dotted Hollywood's Sunset Strip. That explosive, action packed scene on the US West Coast gave rise to the likes of Quiet Riot, Ratt, Poison, L.A. Guns, Mötley Crüe and Faster Pussycat. Likewise, over on the East Coast Twisted Sister and Skid Row reigned supreme. Europe and Australia also boasted at least one lot of champions to the GLAM METAL cause apiece in Hanoi Rocksand the Candy Harlots respectively. And much to the annoyance of those too high'n'mighty to even sniff at the music, these irascible, irresponsible leather boyz with electric toyz scored hits singles and albums, embarked on sell-out world tours and no doubt ravaged many a willing young maiden along the way.
It took the new cultural phenomenon of grunge (as pioneered by the likes of Nirvana, Mudhoney and Soundgarden) to bring the whole thing back down to earth. Still, the music lives on. With 18 tracksin all, GLAM METAL NOIZE 1983-1990 is jam-packed with chest-thumpin', groin-pumpin', anthemic teen metal hits. Among the highlights are Quiet Riot's rousing rendition of the old Slade chestnut CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE, Twisted Sister's blood-boiling WE'RENOT GONNA TAKE IT, Poison's glucose-infused TALK DIRTY TO ME, Mötley Crüe's playful GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS, Pretty Boy Floyd's resounding LEATHER BOYZ WITH ELECTRIC TOYZ, Skid Row's enduring 18 AND LIFE and Faster Pussycat's epic ballad HOUSE OF PAIN.
So break out the make-up, the scarves and bandanas, ripped jeans and cowboy boots and tease up that hair one more time. Now, slam on GLAM METAL NOIZE 1983-1990 and party like there's no tomorrow!!
Consider this a vote for the glam forum too, but only if KISS are included. They practically invented the stuff
