Similarities between Dan Swano and Devin Townsend

I wasn't talking speciffically about Bloodbath but his contribution to music in general whether it's hypocricy, bloodbath, therion or E-type(WTF?)

but yeah you're right...Peter's shrieks make people lose control over their blatters...soon enough he'll be breaking glasses

My opinion is the exact opposite. Devin's records are the best thing I've ever heard in terms of quality, Dan's are second *only* to Devin, but Dan has so much more quantity, probably 3 times as much stuff to keep your ears and mind busy (depending what you're allowed to count). And Devin has lots of quantity as well. They are easily my two favorites.

I would agree with those that said comparing their work isn't apropriate. They're very different and so the thread title is incorrect, IMAO. I'd respond to the title by saying their only "similarity" is that they both are total ass kickers. :kickass:

Interesting thing though, I discovered Devin on THIS BOARD from Lumen (llamura then) about 5 years ago, so maybe there is something to it....weird.

I remember making that recommendation. :)
The two are definitely connected in my mind - mostly because they were my two favourite musicians at the time, but also because they're both the prolific, multi-talented musician/studio guy type. I eventually asked Dan in an interview if he was familiar with Devin, and I wasn't the first to mention the Devin comparison to him.

Terria is one of the greatest albums in the genre in my opinion. Pure genius.

But comparing the two is a bit silly, as they arent really coming from the same thing.

I like them both equally.

The album devin did with vai was a bit shit though to be fair.

Just because Devin and Dan are the two most important/greatest human beings in the history of mankind (besides Snoop Dogg, of course) doesn't mean they could work together and make something of increased awesomeness. It's not like you get to combine their energies Dragon Ball Z fusion-style and get a higher exponent of their powers. Much better off apart doing their own thing.

ugh... snoop dog... what a waste of precious oxygen :p

I don't think so. Dev's vocals on most of those tracks is fucking MINT. "In my dreams with you" is particularly bombass. Not a masterpiece or anything, but a "fun" album to be sure. If for nothing else just to hear Dev sing like that.

Yeh sex and religion is a great feel good party cd, i dig it.

Devin's vocals are the best part about that CD.

The vocals on this are flat out sick! Especially for a 19-year-old. Too bad they made Devin dress like that. Of course, the way he was forced to do these things essentially lead to his little insanity breakdown that spawned Strapping Young Lad, so I'm cool with that.

Haha well yeah, Devin always talks about sex and religion being his selling out album...

The lyrics are terrible, but yeah his vocals are good...and it is ok to listen to, I just wouldnt put it on really when I could listen to other Dev.

I like "Deep Down Into The Pain," and that's it. I don't think it's a very good album simply because Steve Vai can never stop being Steve "Watch Me Wank" Vai. The songs seriously suffer because of it.

The funny thing about that album is that I was an SYL/Devin Townsend fan for a good while before I even knew he was on Sex & Religion; and I'd owned S&R since it was released! Haha.

I hold Dev a bit higher when it comes to production but I don't think it's fair to compare them, really. Both are great at what they do - putting out killer music. ;)

I think the main difference is that Dan really does good songs.
Devin has a cool sound and very interesting and insane things.

But I think Dan catches the longer straw with good, and maybe a bit more listener friendly, songs.

I've never really gotten into Devin.
My mind and ears tend to grow tired halfway through an album :/
