Hey guys,

I'm likely gonna be quad tracking rhythm guitars soon through both of these amps. I'm wondering whether it's better to dial both with a similar tone, or perhaps start with making the recto a bit duller, more scooped sounding... and using the 6505+ to fill up the high mids.

The cab will be a Mesa of some sort... I assume V30s will be involved.

I think that's the general consensus, that the recto will fill up the low mids, and the smooth high end, and the 6505 will fill up the high mids, as you said. Someone more experienced can probably give a better answer hehe.

I got a 5150 and a dual recto tha I can say for sure they complement each other, but don't cut so much mids on the recto the recording will suck for sure.
On the 5150 you can even cut the mids and set them to zero, but I found out with experience and the right pickups that 9 o'clock on 5150 is a good setting, a good balance.
My settings on the 5150:
hi gain input
pre gain on 2 or 1 o' clock (depend on the pickup you use)
low on 1 o' clock
mid on 9 o' clock
high 11.30
post gain on 10 o' clock
resonance on 1 o' clock
presence on 2 o'clock
this is a killer start!

on the dual

gain on 2.30 o' clock
low on 11.30 o' clock
mid on 10 o' clock
high 11.30
presence on 1 o'clock
volume on 12 o'clock, I set it louder than the 5150 because it sounds better at higher volume than the 5150 which usually sounds sloppy at 12.00 o'clock

I think those amps will have those charictaristics without you exaggerating them, and in the past when I've had signigently different sounding doubles when quad tracking, it hasn't turned out that well. So I would reccomend that you set them both so they sound good by themselves, not matching nor really different from eachother. But haven't done it myself with this amp combination. So perhaps you should ignore me. :p

Kao, it's funny actually, because when I dialed in a 6505 on the weekend, I almost dialed it EXACTLY as you've written there. Gets the best sound!

The sad thing is that this amp will be a 6505+ which sucks compared to the original. So I'll be there tweaking for a while.... they don't sound as sweet, and probably won't mesh as well with the recto.

The 6505+ doesn't suck, by any means. They're a bit more twangy/high endy, but still distinctly 5150's. I'd take a 5150II over most other amps, if I had to choose.

I'd dial them in how you would if they were alone, and it should end up sounding pretty godly.

And yeah, the 6/2/4 settings for bass/mid/treble seem to be the most popular. Andy's posted them before, I wonder if that's why?

Haha it could be, but in all honesty I've never seen the Andy settings. It just sounded the best that way in the shop. For some reason the 6505 seems to really like the presence knob cranked up to the 1-2 o'clock mark. I can't say I've heard the 6505+ like it the same way.

I have to say I'm really underwhelmed with the sound of the 6505+ compared to the original. I've now fiddled with 3 different 6505+'s through various cabs, and a single 6505 through the same cabs IMO beat all 3 out every time.
