Have you guys never done a group buy before? Any time anyone participates in a group buy you have to be willing to pay the highest price, because theoretically every single person could drop out except you, that's how group buys work, that's the chance you take.
There's nothing surprising or unusual about this, this is how it works and there's no other way it can work... The other option is to just wait until the very last minute that the group buy is open so that you are confident enough people bought it before you that you will get the cheapest price, but there's no guarantees there either...
Group buys are a gamble in that sense, that's why they are a good deal. If it was just going to be $150 end of story, Slate would just post a coupon code or something, but there is zero incentive for him to do that because then he's just giving everyone an arbitrary discount without any guarantee that there will be a high enough volume of sales to warrant the price drop.
