Slate Virtual Tape Machine

It does work much like VCC yes! Across all channels and then on the master bus. 16 track works better on individual channels and then the 2 track on the master bus

VTM is literally the best thing since sliced mother fucking bread.

YUP.

I've had it for over a month, so I know it INSIDE and OUT and it STILL spits out audio surprises at me.

It simply fucking RULES.

Just testing the demo...it's fucking awesome!

Here's a comparison I made:

Without VTM: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2151496/Solaris VTM BYPASSED.mp3

With VTM: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2151496/Solaris VTM ON.mp3

Used the 1/2" 2 track on the master, and the 2" 16 track on every channel.
It's pretty much unmixed yet, and very raw, just drums and guitars (not reamped yet), no bass and almost no processing, so it's not that obvious...but already makes it sound cooler!

Edit:

Here's a comparison (same clip as before) of the Waves MPX and Slate VTM, just at the master track:

MPX: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2151496/Solaris MPX Mastertrack.mp3

I just blindly bought this and threw it on a mix I'm working on. It took any of the harsh high end out and seemed to soften everything in a very smooth and very appealing way. This is the kind of sound I wanted from VCC. I don't know if it's the combination of VCC and this plug in, (didn't turn VCC off) but the VTM is easily the best (just turn it on) plug in i've ever used. I think there's some real magic here. The whole mix pops more, is more alive and feels automatically richer than before. I literally just threw it on the mix bus and A/B compared it and I loved it immediately. Amazing work Slate team. This is a hands down winner for sure.

guys!!!! just want to bump this page!!!! this plug in is absolutely amazing. I took the plunge straight away as soon as I received the email due to the confidence I had after purchasing vcc when it was beta. I can't believe how good it is, worth every last penny. I have all slates products and after this will always be on the look out for any more developments from the slate digital team. Running this on logic, macbook pro (late 2011) no problems at all.

Can this be used as a distortion? All sounds very clean so far. I'm looking at you, CJ.

EDIT: Especially in comparison to the Waves MPX. I LOVE slapping it on individual tracks and distorting them a bit to increase natural sustain or even going up to 11 on vocals. Sounds great.

I suppose it COULD be used in this manner. The MPX is not truly authentic so it may be better for that task.

I've pushed VTM to 11 on some sources just to see what it sounds like. Crank it all the way up then back it off until the desired level of the 'tape thing' is happening...

Now you just gave me an idea to try it on vox in that way =D

I havé once tried chaining 3 instances of MPX pushed at max, then use this processed track in parallel with the original one. More or less parallel compression except it distorts smoother.

This plugin is just ridiculous!

Mixed couple raw track from this forum quickly together, to be able to mix into this beast, instead of just slamming it to old projects.

OMG!

The examples I've been hearing so far are indeed sounding smooth in a way, but it seems to take away a LOT of highs. I would instantly turn that thing off and rather keep my digital highs, instead of having a cloudy sound.

Screw the digital sounding highs! Thank god the VTM gets rid of them and makes the mix sound so much less harsh and much warmer sounding. If i wanted my recordings to sound digital, I wouldn' have purchased VTM, and the VTM does not make my mixes "cloudy" what so ever.

there is not a THING 'cloudy' about what VTM does tot he highs.

I can set it a couple specific ways and it almost makes the mix TOO bright, but it doesn't really bother you (no grating high-end here).

Tape has a natural albeit less pronounced form of compression and eq so i would put it first on track instances, so you can make subsequent decisions based on what it does. On the 2 buss you want it before a limiter if you use one but I think a case could be made for putting it in different places in the chain otherwise.
