I had no idea where it came from but my old man used to use it all the time when we were fishing, as in the lake is as flat as a shit carters hat. It wasn't until I was watching a doco in 2003 about the creation of the underground sewer systems in London (7 Wonders of the Industrial World) that I actually realised the "Night Soil Man", the guy who collected the pans before there was a sewer system, carried the cans on his head, hence he was the shit carter with the flat hat.
