As someone that doesn't have a Walmart I stand by my words :p TBH I wouldn't have a clue what Walmart sell. I do know that in the US Target sells CD's, Target here hasn't sold CD's for about 5 years and before that they only sold top40 and classic hits. That's if you can find a Target, they've shut down about half their stores in the last 5 years.

I bought the most recent Metallica and Iron Maiden albums from Target. Prefer Target to Walmart, although the prices at Target can be obscene. Targets vary wildly based on their location and neighborhood.

I don't remember any of our general retail stores like Target ever selling metal. They'd sell AC/DC, Motley Crue etc but only when they had something new out. They sold Metallica after the Black album and some got in the back catalogue. But we've pretty much always had to go to specialist music stores, then in some cities we had dedicated metal store, but they were pricey.

20 years ago Best Buy used to have a preety good selection. Back in Las Vegas there was Zia Records which is a small chain of independent stores in Arizona and Nevada. Metal selection was amazing and since they bought and sold used music you had the chance to find some real gems.

Found a metal only shop in Cambridge near Harvard University. Checked it out a few weeks ago and it is a cool, small place. The selection was too brutal for me, nearly all brutal death metal and black metal, not too much thrash or heavy metal, sadly.

Melbourne used to be our best bet, which was luckily where I came from. We had Metal For Melbourne (which changed names several times before shutting down), they also had a record label and helped quite a few local bands. We had Missing Link which was more punk and harder to get metal stuff, damn they had some good shit under the counter for a price. There was also a few smaller ones I can't remember the name of and we had a Virgin Megastore where Megadeth did an instore appearance in '92. But we also had half a dozen second hand stores scattered around the suburbs that always had cheap vinyl. These days I know there is one store in Sydney that has been there since about 1977, and there is a merch shop in Perth run by the bass player of Perth band Allegiance that nearly broke the thrash world once.
