Well I was told the tribute band were gonna come on at 8pm. So we left the pub at 7.45pm only to be confronted by a massive queue outside the Astoria with O/D Saxon already on stage! We got in just in time for the end of wheels of steel, and then it was all over! I can't say I was particularly heart broken though! But I can't tell you what they were like either! The singer did say though "we are Saxon", and I thought "No you kin ain't! The only regret I have is that I didn't see the gig from the start so that I could see if they were misleading people. But judging by the above remark by the singer, it seems that they were. There was a big crowd in there (something very unusual for a support band) and they seemed to have gone down well. But how many of those watching realised that they were NOT actually watching Saxon?
As for Dio. Well they played a very good set, including all the classics - Man on a silver mountain, Long live rock n roll, We rock, Mob rules, Stand up and shout, Don't talk to strangers, Children of the sea, Holy diver, Last in line, Rainbow in the dark, etc etc.
But why oh why do 'old school' bands think that solo's are entertaining? They arn't, they are boring, VERY VERY boring! After just 3 songs we were treated to a very mediocre drum solo. Then later on we were treated to a very very boring 10 minute guitar solo. Solo's are not entertaining, they are just self indulgent rubbish. Made even worse when they arn't particularly good solo's.
That said though, Dio did choose some cracking songs to play, so it was a very good night.
