So we might be playing The Leper Affinity or The Drapery Falls..

Depends on how skilled your assembly is, Leper is much more difficult to play than Drapery. They are both super awesome songs, though.

Heh really jumping in at the deep end there. Leper is probably one of the most technically difficult Opeth songs (in terms of guitar playing anyway) and I think Drapery would be difficult in the sense of capturing the vibe in the song (atmospherically very dense).

Play The Leper Affinity.
I don't think it's one of Opeth's most difficult songs to play..it really isnt.

Well the line up for people playing would be a drummer who's played for 9 odd years. A mate of mine who's been playing guitar for about a year and is quite good, a bassist who we're still looking for and me. We're all fifteen though, and I agree that Leper is much more difficult than Drapery but we're willing to give it a shot. Pity though because everyone else who plays an instrument at our school sucks to be blunt.

Yeah catching the atmosphere of Drapery would be really hard but it would sound great if we could pull it off.

What is, then?

For me its Face of Melinda... surprising I know but I find the fingering particularly tricklesom. The Leper Affinity was the first Opeth song I learnt, and once I'd memorised it its easy - got one of my favourite solos in too.

Probably put deliverance and BTPISIO up there as well. And THe Lotus eater...

Well some guitarists have different strengths and weaknesses but when I made a thread on the hardest Opeth songs to play on guitar, The Leper Affinity, The Moor, and Ghost of Perdition (though it's only hard because of the acoustic section) were the most mentioned so in general, yes it's hard. Anywho, if you guys can pull off either at 15, you're my heroes (18 now and I'm still sucking, been playing since 15), but as much as TLA would be badass, don't play it unless you can nail it, a tight performance of a simpler song > an ok performance of an awesome song.

do you mean as in a school assembly? because then i think drapery would be much more appropriate. how many school kids do you hear rocking out to "YOUR BODY IS MINE TO AVAAAAAIIILL!"? drapery is the windowpane of your two options - 'the song that will get us chicks backstage.'

You're all 15?! If you guys could actually pull that off, that would be something I'd like to see.

If we play it we'll make sure it gets videoed and I'll upload it.

..

I can play piano but I don't think we'll worry about the ending who knows though.

..

Yeah it's a school assembly and judging by the fact that 60% of our school do not appreciate metal they wouldn't understand the growling. I doubt anyone would be overly fussed about it though.

All these statements like "X song is not that hard for an experienced guitarist" or "X song is easy once you have it down" are just stupid. For the latter, EVERYTHING is easy once you "have it down," and for the former, no Opeth song is that hard for a really experienced guitarist.

Benighted is no easy task. Nor is Serentiy Painted Death.

The Leper Affinity is not that hard for an experienced guitarist.

I'm no fingerpicking expert but even I used to play that song, it isn't really hard.

Opeth songs aren't hard anyway, Leper is one of the hardest Opeth songs as I've said but that's not saying much. The solos are easy, but the song maintains a constant high pace which can be tiresome to pull off live

Drapery on the other hand, is much easier (I could play the whole song 2 weeks after I first ever touched a guitar). Although, like some people said, it might be difficult to catch the vibe of that song on stage. Especially Mike's growls are superb.

don't fuck it up.

The leper affinity is like one of the easiest songs if you have a Gothenburg/Death history of playing.

Many of the other songs are easy if you follow the tabs and don't play them the way they're actually played (simplified chords etc). To this day i have yet to see a correct tab for the end of MA. I figured out the way its actually played a while ago, but never really bothered to tab it out and submit it to any sites. When i get my new guitar i'll record a bunch of Opeth stuff and put it on jewtube.
