So what grade do you give 2005 so far?

Disappointing:
Nokturnal Mortum

So you finally heard it, yes? Or is this still based entirely on reviews you've read and a few downloads?

Yet you loved Taste of Victory. Strange.

There have been some excellent metal releases this year that reassure me I'll never abandon the genre completely like Nevermore, Primordial, & Moonsorrow, and still some I'm greatly anticipating like Arcturus, but putting together a year end list regardless of genre concerns is still going to be a bitch this year...

Three pages of material, thus far, and the constant bumping has worn away my desire to not weigh in on this. So...sorry guys. :tickled: Let's see, just remember that my horizons are fairly broad when it comes to styles and such.

Best of 2005 (so far)
Crimson Moonlight - Veil of Remembrance
Frantic Bleep - The Sense Apparatus
Buried Inside - Chronoclast
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
Norma Jean - O God, the Aftermath
Losa - The Perfect Moment
Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw

Notable of 2005
Coram Lethe - The Gates of Oblivion
Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn
Symphony in Peril - The Whore's Trophy
Meshuggah - Catch Thirty Three
Pelican - March into the Sea EP
Grand Magus - Wolf's Return
As Cities Burn - Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest
Circle of Dead Children - Zero Comfort Margin
V:28 - SoulSaviour
Witchcraft - Firewood
Into the Moat - The Design
Beecher - This Elegy, His Autopsy
Twilight - Twilight
Swallow the Sun - Ghosts of Loss

Disappointments of 2005
Extol - The Blueprint Dives
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Opeth - Ghost Reveries

Anticipating of 2005
Age of Silence - Complications - Trilogy of Intricacy
Arsis - A Diamond for Disease
Watchmaker - Erased from the Memory of Man
Crowpath - Son of Sulphur
Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies

Where the fuck are [insert band name here] of 2005?!
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
Kind of like it, but not really my thing apparently.
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Kind of like it, but not really my thing apparently. Same results with Dead Heart in a Dead World and Enemies of Reality.
Nokturnal Mortum - Welrfjekfvnlekw
Haven't heard it, but I do like them.

:dopey:

YOB, Thee Plague of Gentlemen, and Reverend Bizarre. These three releases alone make it a great year. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

Not to mention Isole, Primordial, QOTSA, Slough Feg, Baroness, Shamelady, Burning Saviours, and a plthora of others that come afterwards.

...and what about Hammers of Misfortune coming out with a new one this year?! FUCK.

2005 = :kickass:

Arsis - A Diamond for Disease

You fag! You got me all excited thinking that Arsis somehow conjured up another full-length for a late year release. Then I check Metal-Archives and it's an EP with 1 new song on it with a tentative release date for this year. Homo. :p

I almost wrote MCD after the title, but opted not to. I guess I was meant to piss you off? :dopey:

Might as well start keeping track:
Things I've been called by Opeth17
gay robot
fag

EDIT: Things I've been implied to be by Opeth17
fudgepacker

:tickled:

To resurrect a classic picture:

=yuo

Add that to the list. :loco:

anyone hear the new Boris yet? i only have Akuma No Uta, only heard it once, but it's cool, and the new one's supposed to be mellower and, well, very good.

B- for Metal : Deathspell Omega - Kénôse leads at the moment for best metal (mcd) , Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness for best album .

A for Music I can't even make a top 5 in order : The Evpatoria Report - Golevka , Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn & Bohren & der Club of Gore - Geisterfaust stand out though.

To enter top 10 at release date :
Lunar Aurora - Mond
The Ocean
- Aeolian

Off the top of my head...

Yeah, I concede to there being some great albums this year, no doubt:

On the money:
Primordial, Bruce Dickinson, Novembers Doom, Moonsorrow, Rudra

On the fence:
Nevermore (some of it is phenomenal, the rest is just ok), Slough Feg (lasting appeal is fading, I still firmly believe their debut is the best thing they've done)

Disappointing:
Nokturnal Mortum, Drudkh, Nile, Kreator, Judas Priest

Those in the disappointing list appear there because the fact is, they've done better. While these albums aren't bad, they just don't cut it for me. If you're previous albums are better than your current offering then you're delivering disappointing results. Not sure how this can be argued really.

If those "disappointing" albums moved up to "on the fence" ranking, then the year so far would be a B-. If they moved to "on the money", we're talking A-.

So as it stands, the year is scoring at C- or D+ territory. :p

You need to listen to more stuff. Sorry but all that stuff is basically "mainstream" as far as the metal scene goes, you need to dig slightly deeper for stuff like:

Ainulindalë "The Lay of Leithan"
Alcest "Le Secret"
Aphotic/Dusk "To Find New Darkness/The Slumber"
Draugsang "Seil på Skyggens Hav"
Graveland "Fire Chariot of Destruction"
Isole "Forevermore"
Jesu "Jesu"
Marblebog "Forestheart"
Morrigan "Headcult"
Mournful Congregation "The Monad of Creation"
Obtest "Is Kartos I"
Pantheist "Amartia"
Thee Plague of Gentlemen "Primula Pestis"

...and other stuff that's actually good

EDIT: I said "stuff" four times

There's another new Exodus release? Wow, that was fast.

The Great:
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Candlemass - Candlemass
Biomechanical - Empires of the Worlds

The Good:
Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia
Meshuggah - Catch 33
Dream Theater - Octavarium (bordering on bad, but not quite)
Overkill - ReliXIV (definitely a disappointment after the last few)

The Bad:
Flotsam and Jetsam - Dreams of Death (one of my favorite bands, easily their worst release)

There's probably a few I'm forgetting.
