SOCCER NATION!

Also why did Parreira take out Pienaar for the red card? Wouldn't make more sense to take out a defender since they were 2 goals down? Does he think they can beat France? I dunno.

I think it was mainly becuase Pienaar already had a yellow card and he couldn't risk having him get another yellow (red) and not play the last match against France. South Africa will need him, Mphela and Tshabalala more than ever.

Parreira probably knew the goals average could potentially decide whether South Africa advances or not, so another reason why he probably pulled Pienaar out was because he realized another goal (which was at that point, 90% likely since Uruguay had a PK) would destabilize his team and potentially open the gates for more Uruguayan goals. In my point of view, he may have thought South Africa had no chance of turning things around, but at least he'd try to avoid Uruguay from scoring again (by keeping a full defensive line). In the end, it didn't work.

i love watching soccer and will admit i dont know much about it...im pretty much casual fan and only during world cups.

that said, and maybe someone can explain this to me, but why is any physical content no matter how unintentional a penalty? it is a sport right?

i mean i was watching today and they fall and cry about EVERYTHING...and some of the calls are so ridiculous, its basically saying "well you can try to defend, but u better hope you do it perfectly or its a penalty"

and also...anyone wanna clarify offsides? i thought it was if an offensive player is behind the defense at the moment the ball leaves the foot of the player making the pass...but i feel like im seeing it called after the ball is already in the air.

sorry i probably sound stupid to everyone in this thread, haha. but at least im trying to learn and not just being an ignorant american fan lol

Hahah not a problem. Being the crazy Brazilian fanatic who's been surrounded by soccer since day one, I'll try to answer your questions.

Soccer is actually a very physical sport. However, I don't think you're quite right about "any physical contact." As a matter of fact, there's a few "contact" situations that are perfectly allowed and not all fouls (not penalties, I'll explain the difference) are called. The refs. allow a lot of the ones that should be called a foul let by. It's tough to get used to it, because referees have different criteria. Plus, soccer isn't and will NEVER be aided by technology for the referee calls. The reason is simple: one of the things that make soccer special is that there's room for human error, even referees.

As for penalties and fouls... Basically when a foul is committed outside the square box around the goal (the big one), it's called a foul. A penalty is only if the foul is committed inside the box (penalty kick, NOT like in hockey lol).

Offside - Let's say we're attacking. I pass the ball to you, but there aren't any defenders between where you're at at the exact moment of the pass and the goalie, that's an offside. Every now and then, they call it a little late. You gotta remember, the ref's assistant (the flag guys) are the ones who initially call the offside by raising the flag. Sometimes it takes a second for the referee to notice it, therefore the late calls.

If you're still confused, I can show you videos explaining it. :)

(I'm all about converting people to soccer, especially the Americans)

I remember when the school I worked at asked me to coach soccer and I had to try and learn all the rules. It seemed so confusing, and then I had to try and teach it while I was still learning it. After reading every soccers for morons thing on the web I could find and watching every match I could find (and even getting out and playing it myself) I finally learned [almost] everything and I fell in love with it (still second to our Football, but a very close second). and about the rules and it being confusing, soccer doesnt have nearly as many rules as our Football (which has to be one of the most complex games on the planet).

Ack. What a sad own goal. This year seems strange, but maybe I'm just paying more attention. A lot of games have been decided as a result of hand balls, red cards, and own goals.

Well they are definitely vulnerable. Korea needs to press them hard now. They can tie this up. And they should have if the guy would have shot with his right food. Way open, instead he went for the hardest possible goal... outside of the foot to curl in a narrow gap?

I think Argentina was solid for the most part. They're far from being the best team in the world, but they had a really easy time against South Korea. Can Argentina go all the way, though? Not with that defense. But watching Messi play is something that us, who're having the privilege to live in this generation shouldn't take for granted, just like watching Ronaldinho a few years ago. The kid is really amazing.

You know what, since my confidence in Mexico is low for today's game and Argentina is going to be 1st in their group the first game of the round of 16 is looking more like Argentina vs Uruguay. I would hate it for 2 South American teams to face off so early but an Argentina - Uruguay game would be amaizing.

Lots of possibilities, I want this game to start already.

Uruguay 3-2 Argentina

(Forlan, Forlan and Abreu for Uruguay, Messi and Higuain for Argentina)

Strong showing (offensively) for Argentina. I had a phone call about a possible teaching job (if you are the praying type shot some my away about this) so I missed the 2 goals in the second half. Still no goals from Messi, Tevez, or Milto, but they do play the worst team in the WC next so it should be a clinic on putting the ball in the back of the net.
