I am not going to lie or sugar coat anything here.
I am not the biggest FW fan in the world by any means, but I know there are many big fans here.

Been listeing to NO EXIT and AWAKEN THE GUARDIAN a lot lately, so I wanted to express some appreciation for the following tracks:

I prefer 90s FW, which blocks me from claiming to be a huge fan, I guess. I'm more of a mid-size fan. I also think FWX was a great album, which'll probably get me some raised eyebrows.

Fair enough......
It's all good. I mean any long running band who had different "eras" are always going to have fans who prefer one period over another. It's all good. Any band who alters their sound knows this is going to happen.

Yeah, a few years back I picked up the STILL LIFE (Err, I think that's what it is called) 2CD live set, and I really could not get into it at all, no matter how hard I try. Maybe I will revisit it again sometime.

I am enjoying revisiting both ATG and NO EXIT, both of which I haven't heard in over 20 years.

two of my all-time favorite albums. There was nothing back in 1986 that sounded even relatively close to Awaken the Guardian. It was and still remains truly different and epic. Ivory Gate of Dreams from No Exit is untouchable. Of course I am a huge fan but those two releases helped change the face and direction of metal back at that time, especially for those of us looking for something new and different.

Funnily enough Still Life was the first FW I got. I hadn't heard them beforehand, just heard their name. And I too did not like it at first. I remember that my first listen to it was while driving in the middle of a sunny summer day....not the best way to experience APSOG for the first time, as I realized later when it had become one of my all-time favorite albums.

I like Awaken the Guardian too, just as much.

I consider Fates Warning to be one of my all-time favorite bands, but I only care for the first three records with John Arch singing. I never cared much for the Ray Alder period, No Exit did very little for me. I usually like one or two tracks from every 90's disk, "Point of View" is one that I really like. For me, Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian are the absolute pinnacle of progressive power metal, and maybe even US metal period. "The Apparition" is noe of the best metal songs ever penned.

That's why I never use a live album to get a feeling for a band. Whenever I've tried to do that it never works out. The only exception to that is I did see the Let There Be Rock VHS AC/DC did YEARS ago and that got me into them but typically yeah, I try to avoid those until I'm more familiar. As Pate said, I think you might enjoy the even earlier Fates albums.

Jason, check out The Spectre Within and Night on Brocken. Those three are the only ones I like, but I LOVE them. So classic.

Yeah, just like ATG, I had those back in the day. It's just been a VERY long time since I have heard them. And yes, I will certainly keep my eyes out for these as I definitely want to hear them again.

The pinnacle. IMO. Also, I'm probably one of the few who couldn't really care less for most of 'Perfect Symmetry'. Aside from the last few songs the thing just bores me to no end...and I LIKE bleak, hopeless music.

I'm a big fan of Alder-era Fates!! No Exit was actually the first prog album I remember having. It always stood out to me as being something really different (which it was). I love all their stuff now more than I ever have, and the show at PP was the most memorable show I've ever experienced. Great stuff!

No Exit is probably my favorite FW album. I recently bought the anniversary version of it. Jason, it makes no sense to me whatsoever why you're not already a huge fan of the first three albums at least. NOB, TSW, and ATG are traditional metal classics to the hilt! :notworthy
