Ok, im gonna try to explain this the best i can.....

Im wondering if somthing is wrong with my setup as i track guitars.....It seems like im not able to get any low end spikes on the wave image in cubase when tracking a mic'ed cabinet.....Not even with palm mutes and such. Its all the same size on the wave image....I cannot post a pic right now cause im at work.....But i just thought of it.

I guess what i mean is the image doesnt look very dynamic at all....just looks like flat noise......

Can someone post a screen of their guitar images?

When i track DI bass or do a DI of guitar the low end spikes are there......But mic'ed up its flat.

Know what i mean?

Don't worry, it's supposed to be that way. A clean signal is very dynamic, a mic'd cab(distorted) is compressed to a pulp visually so all you should really see is a big block of black.

that's somewhat normal with saturated mic'd guitars. However if it is completely flat that's usually a good indicator that you have the gain turned up too high, if you are using a tube amp that has a resonance control you have it turned down too much, your not recording with enough volume, your mic is too far away from the cab, old tubes or a mixture of any of those.

For the most part when i close mic my 5150 the sustained notes are pretty flat, overall RMS drifts +/- 2-3db but I get some low end spikes during palm mutes (usually about a 3-4db spike). I have my resonance knob dimed and my gain moderate.

^I do get noticeable spikes on the fader for my guitar track when palm muting and such....But the wave image is just a block....know what i mean?

Im using a 5150 New tubes (2 months old or so) Res is on 9......Mic is right on the grill. Off center.

I know what you mean, but just lower the level going into your computer. Or use a compressor to catch those palms. I use a distressor that only brings on some gain reduction at 1, 2 dB at most and only occasionally. But yeah, at 24 bit, you don't need to be that close to clipping.
