Sonata Arctica - Unia

I ordered the japanese version mainly so I could get it a month before the euro release (should have it in a week or two). But I couldn't help it when it leaked and have heard it all.

It is definately very different at first listen. No more speedy drums and the guitar suffers from the downtuned syndrome. I was pretty angry on first listen but since it still has that unique SA sound it has grown on me after quite a few listens in my car. I think it is ok but definately not their best. The only way I will be really angry is if they continue this style from now on because the speedy drums and guitar is a big part of what has defined SA for me. I just wish they could have done it more like Reckoning Night because I understand that they don't want to be defined as just a speed band that sounds the same and generic on every song. In RN they had a perfect balance with normal paced and fast paced music. Don't Say A Word was a pretty fast song but was still not stereotypically fast. It also had good song structure that was more than just speed, yet at the same time it still had speed. Unia should have been like half of the types of songs it actually is and the other half faster songs (some stereotypical SA speed songs, and the rest semi fast RN type songs). To me Unia is "Blinded No More" the album. I feel like they are trying to sound more like Nightwish than themselves, hell, Paid In Full sounds just like Nemo at the very beginning, its scary.

Overall it has grown on me since it is SA. Unfortunately if they keep this path I might cry since I feel RN was really bringing them in the right direction, guess it didn't...

I hope one of the japanese bonus tracks is old speedy SA flair though. Out of three bonus tracks one is just a instrumental version of the worst song on Unia, The Worlds Forgotten, The Words Forbidden. This song is so bland and I heard it was originally created for their upcoming PC game Winterhearts' Guild. Of the other two bonus songs one is a cover song so it probably is not fast either. So there is one track that I can have a decent amount of hope will be speedy. Guess I am screwed...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that it is kinda cool you can hear the bass on this album. But the thing is that now you can't hear the guitar. There is like one guitar solo that I can bring to mind from the whole album and it is not very fast or good. I don't see how people can say it sounds more progressive because the music is pretty basic for the most part....

Does that word "Unia" have any lyrical meaning in the album or is it just the boring Finnish translation of word "dreams"?

edit: I don't mean it's a bad title. I just think something like "Olut" could've been more exciting and beautiful.

The lyrics for "Paid In Full" isn't too bad. It's a little bit on the emo side IMO, but pretty good for a Sonata Arctica song

oh shit!! i had forgotten all about that! i honestly can't see how that game si gonna be any good, seriously. Ed Hunter was cool cause you basically got to play Doom to a maiden soundtrack; this is an RPG with SA music, i dont see how its gonna work...

Unia smokes! Sonata's writing style has matured a lot with these last 2 albums. I suppose it stands to reason that they might lose a small handful of fans because of that. But, considering their rise in popularity, I doubt they care.

For those who are so quick to condemn Sonata from a lyrical perspective, I would question where the rulebook is for determining what gives lyrics merit and credibility. Is it singing about death, loss, God, religion, love, swords and axes, medieval times, dragons, etc...? When and if you attend a Sonata show, you will see their fans crazily belting out the lyrics the entire show. Seems to me they've done their job, lyrically.

No tardo, it's that their lyrics make no sense and are often times sung in broken english, or else a line doesn't translate. How did you not get that from previous conversation?:zombie:

i never understand how you can judge band on lyrics? who the fuck listens for good lyrics in metal? i mean some bands have good lyrics but most? who gives a shit, i listen cuz of the music.

Only band i really love the lyrics are

Death

lol, i don't think you can possibly call any of Sonata's lyrics "great" unless you mean it in the sense that theres definitely translation issues and the phrasing is so awkward you have to laugh

hehehe yeah, I know what you mean. But in fairness, their English is better than my Finnish, so good luck to them. I didn't even know they had a new cd out - I'll give it a whirl and see if it grabs my nads.... :)

it sounds like typical sonata arctica, nothing groundbreaking, but nonetheless it's sonata arctica at its best. to me, 'unia' and 'winterheart's guild' are the only albums that are consistent for the most part from beginning to end.
