So I recorded this band's EP in my university's studio. I had 2 days to track everything, one for drums and one for guitars, bass and vocals. Even worse I didn't even know how the studio worked, gear etc.. so I had to do it pretty quick and learn it fast.
So I took one song and bounced the raw recordings for you guys to have fun and/or to practice mixing. I know the guitar sound is far from perfect, it was a marshall valvestate (fizz city) and I only had my audix i5 as I had forgotten my SM57 at home, and literally no time to test mic positions, so it's a bit fizzy, although I managed to have it work on my mix. This is not a metal band btw, it's a Rock band with a southern/stoner feeling or something.

Here's the link for the tracks:

Tempo is 143bpm

So if you want to know or just curiosity, list of mics I used for drums:

Overheads - AKG SE300B with CK91 capsule
Hat - SM81
Kick - D112
Snare Top and Bttm - i5 and SM57
Toms - Some Stagg mics from a kit of drum mics and Sennheiser e602 for Floor Tom
Room - Rode K2

For vocals I used an AKG Perception 420 and Bass was DI through my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.

So.. have fun I guess :)

Oh btw, all 3 toms are already edited, as in, deleted all parts that weren't being played, etc, as well as the Snare top and Bottom, I sample his hardest hit and replaced with all hits I found necessary, I wasn't going to undo all that so I left that as is.

Sidestick and clean lead are blank? crap gonna check that out

I just checked both myself and they have audio in it... just a couple of seconds, Sidestick is separated from the snare track because I sample replaced the sidestick when I mixed it.

Hi,

fine work. the toms sounds very good, ´cause of no dirty signal like overheads e.g.
With my records i´ve much problems with cross talk (? that´s what the translation says). So how do you microphone the drums with so less cross talk? How big is your room?

Hey man, the toms definitely had some bleed, although really quiet, a simple gate solved the problem, but when I mixed it I just decided to cut when toms weren't hit, since they don't get hit that often.

Okay here's my attempt. Mostly done with DT100s with laptop soundcard in nero's (coffee shop, for those who don't have them) so it's not exactly spot on lol. But please give a listen and tell me what you think, it's the first time i've ever properly mixed anything other than guitar and drums. Mixed and mastered in reaper with only free plugins (with the exception of apeq)

i'll upload the wav soon

EDIT: http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=af31ca04b8d761a3edd6e3a98a4027f3 thats 49MB wav

BTW those drum tracks where great to work with, very well recorded. I decided to keep the bleed from everything, it sounded more alive that way

my god and to think that a few years back i was almost tempted to buy a valvestate:Puke:

that guitar sound is so hard to do anything with. You don't have the DIs do you?

I actually kind of like the guitar sound, I think it works well for this style personally!

@ Heavenshell - mix sounds killer, though perhaps a little too "metal" for this kind of rock lol

I can actually make it work very well in the mix. Although yeah, it isn't perfect I know, but that's mainly my fault as I didn't have time to mess around with mic position etc
