Thanks for the suggestions. Some were great. To give you a better idea of the stuff I am lookin for here are some other songs I found that I liked.

Breaking Benjamins - so cold
motley crew - if I die tomorrow
Metallica - until it sleeps
Rolling stones - paint it black
Pantera - cemetery gates
Mudvayne - goodbye

.... alot of people have been recommending alice in chains to me and I still haven't found anything I like from them.

Get the first 5 Motley Crue albums (Too Fast For Love; Shout At The Devil; Theatre of Pain; Grils, Girls, Girls; Dr. Feelgood), the first 4 (mainstream) Pantera (Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display Of Power, Far Beyond Driven, Great Southern Trendkill), and try some of these bands:
Tool
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Shadows Fall
Slayer
Trouble
Acid Bath
In Flames
Soundgarden
Nevermore
Black Sabbath
Alice In Chains
Anthrax
My Dying Bride
Bruce Dickenson
Some are metal, some are not, but those are all good places to start if you want to get into heavy music.

Try the following (not all them are sappy ballads but):

Black Label Society - Rust
Down - Learn From My Mistake
My Dying Bride - Black God
Slayer - South of Heaven/Seasons In The Abyss

i definatley agree with the slayer songs they are not that hard and very good.
a good ballad is "line in the sand" by bleeding through. i will get flamed for sayin that but i get fklamed for everything i say so i dont really care.

shinedown has many good songs- 45, simple man

Ehhhh

Isn't the guy asking for some kind of light metal - Metallica's Unforgiven isn't heavy...So how come people are saying "Try Slayer and Pantera"??? WTF? If I'd heard Slayer when I was only interested in melodic type stuff I'd have thought all metal was crap.

Exactly man. I just need some light metal to ease me into it. Im not ready for the hardcore shit yet.

Drudkh... maybe
My Dying Bride
Opeth

Children of bodom -though I dont like them- are a good "intro" band

If you are currently enjoying "The Unforgiven" and "Cemetary gates", have you tried punching yourself in the throat or slapping your testicles ?

They are roughly as enjoyable for me.

The ultimate ballad.

"Suffer to survive
Instinct I despise

Stalking the night, searching for
A victim to defile
Cock she craves today
Cum she wants to spray
And to reach the orgasm through torture

From behind, pain shivering down my spine
I feel paralyzed only controlling my mind

Strapped to a table, naked, genitals exposed
Eyes claimed open, mouth
gagged shut, terrified
Locks my scrotum in a vice and
tightens forcefully
Agony, silent screams, want to die

Shackled and bound, unaware my fate
Destined to be maimed to stimulate

The skin is peeled off my dick
Done with a razor blade
She begins to suck
Blood and cum amok
She rips my cock off with her teeth
Masticate, gnawing and chewing the stump
She regurgitates, I'm covered in my bloody
chunks

Suffer to survive
Instinct I despise

I am alive, victimized
Tortured fate, asexual state"
