This is something that I have been noticing a lot with some bands, there are just some songs which sound far too similar to others to be a coincidence, here are a few examples that I can think of off the top of my head, if you have anything to add pleaase do.

Now there's something about Dream Theaters latest album Octavarium which makes me think that they actually did this on purpose, but here what I think:

The chord progression in the chorus for These Walls literally sounds like something Linkin Park would have written, this is not an attempt at bashing DT but im not exaggerating at all, thats the first thing I thought when I heard that song and my mind has not changed since.

I Walk Beside You reminds me a hell of a lot of modern U2.

Never Enough sounds like a combination of Hysteria and Stockholm Syndrome by Muse, it sounds like DT have taken the best parts of each song and have done their own thing with it.

The Test That Stumped Them All from the 6 Degrees album Im almost certain has a riff in it that is a riff from 'Revolution Is My Name' by Pantera only its faster.

The bassline from Home on 'Scenes' sounds pretty close to that bass line from the song Forty Six and Two by Tool.

Arch Enemy are another band of having stuff that sounds a little too close to their Idols:

The verse riff from Seed Of Hate on Burning Bridges sounds like it was lifted straight from the chorus of Bark At The Moon by Ozzy Osbourne.

The solo section in Dark Of The Sun from the Stigmata album sounds exactly like the intro riff on Now Your Ships Are Burned by Yngwie Malmsteen.

The chord progression in Burning Angel from Wages Of Sin sounds like a modernised take on the progression from Hangar 18 by Megadeth.

Pantera's The Underground In America main riff is a sped up version of a Black Sabbath riff, I can't remember exactly what song it was taken from but it was on the Paranoid album, Electric Funeral maybe???

The power/prog band Majestic have a song called Black Moons Rising, the main intro riff and the verse of this song sounds almost exactly like Deja Vu by Yngwie Malmsteen, no joke, they changed it up a little byt doing something with the way its noted but compare the two songs and you will laugh just like I did.

Any agreements, disagreements or additions to the list are welcome. :kickass:

Once Beyond Purgatory - Book of the Dead
ripped off....
Kamelot - Fall From Grace
Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father

The funny part is that I wrote it almost entirely on my own.

The main riff from Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic Mission
sounds remarkably like
the part of Dream Theater - Strange Deja Vu when the song picks up.

I wrote this thing in Bm/G lydian and it was almost note for note Tony Macalpines song -city beneath the sea. I had never heard of tony at this point in my life.:loco:

We have a local band who has one song that sounds very opethish. And its one of their best songs, although in an effort not to sound like opeth they arent doing more of that style. It kinda sucks :(. It absolutely goes off when they play it live.

The Eyes Of Medusa - Silent Goddess (Kamelot)

Chorus-parts are similar, the vocal melody I mean.

anything time requiem - rip off of SyX.. alot of adagios first album in particular, second album not as much but still somewhat also Syxified..

if its just a riff here and there its not a big deal i dont think.. alot of bands might share particular points, especially with the use of classical music such as SyX does - and you might hear that same classical piece in other band's music too, but i do think credit must be given where credit is due otherwise its musical plagiarism. i cannot stand however, the numerous crappy bands out there that basically just remix several songs of another bands work to form 'their' song.. ie time requiem..

as long as the song sounds good, why should it matter?

Well usually it doesn't sound good because you have already heard it done better by the artist who originally wrote it. As someone else already stated its an issue of musical creativity.

I don't care if its a riff taken from a not very well known band and done better by another band, but when its like a famous guitar riff or famous vocal line thats been taken by another band then its just stupid.

However some bands do it not for the sake of stealing it for themselves but as a tribute to the bands they love, which sometimes does work well.
