Seeming as there a lot of dudes on here who have plenty of experience with guitars and getting good sounds, I was wondering, what amp sim would be best for getting a sound like the rhythm guitars on the SuperUnknown Soundgarden album? I really like the sound on songs like Mailman, 4th Of July and Head Down. The distortion and sound is so heavy but you can still hear the guitar clearly. It sounds a bit like a strat does with clean sounds but I'm sure they used guitars with humbuckers on that album.

I love those tones, one of my favorite albums! It would probably take a lot of tweaking to get that tone just right, a lot of work went into Superunknown, from what I gather too much for work for the members of Soundgarden's tastes.

They hated how much work the producer made them put into it. They really scrutinized the integrity of takes to the point of it being ridiculous. Their next and final album, down on the upside was a big departure from this. Matt Cameron tried a lot of single mic techniques on the drums to simplify the recording process. There's interviews about it on http://web.stargate.net/soundgarden/ somewhere about it.

edit: here's a semi-descriptive interview http://web.stargate.net/soundgarden/articles/mesaboogie.shtml

The guitar sound on that album though is the best sound I think they ever had on all the albums. A lot of work just for a sound though.
