Sounds of the Underground tour... are you aware...?

Is it possible for any style of music released by major labels to be underground?

underground by genre...yes...the style of music being played is an underground style of music...its not considered the norm in social standards, so therefore it can be seen as underground.

i understand that it is not necessarily the underground music of the metal (or whatever you want to call it) scene...because a lot of the bands playing are the more popular metal bands signed to mainstream labels.

plus, when compared to large festival tours...this tour is pretty underground. most big festivals that actually tour (not one day things) are headlined by a fairly popular band. there isn't a single platinum album selling band on this tour...gold, maybe...i don't know a lot of the numbers on the bands as far as sales goes. A lot of other rock tours like ozzfest have huge names headlining . So, once again, this tour is underground in comparison to those tours.

i understand that this tour is not composed of bands that are geniune underground acts...but, in comparison to other music...this tour is pretty underground.

Some people said that paying 30 dollars to see Opeth is too much... I'm not sure what types of ticket prices you have in your area... but I must say around my area ticket prices are frequently far more expensive than this... pretty much every concert I have gone to and will be going to this summer ended up being more expensive than Sounds of the Underground...

Therefore to see Opeth (which will also be my first time) performing stuff from a new album is well worth the price... not to mention Lamb of God will be there... and you guys are welcome to your opinions but I think they are fuckin crazy too...

Frankly, I think the whole argument is retarded. It has the same roots as the anti-Roadrunner label arguments. If you don't like the tour, the concept, the bands, the name, the relationship of labels and distributors to each other, etc. don't go. Who cares? Enjoy your "Underground" kvlt shows in someone's living room or garage that someone whispered into your ear about while you standing outside your local "Non-corporate, Non-Starbucks" coffee shop and I'll enjoy the SOTU without you just like you said. :Smug:

Out.

heh might not be your area but rather the type of bands you're seeing... many people here are into bands less popular than Opeth so they're used to ~$20 concerts.

I guess I just got lucky.

I'll be seeing Opeth indoors at a fantastic club in only 5 days with Strapping Young Lad. Plus we can hang outside by the beach drinking our own beers (hopefully with Opeth if they don't hide backstage all afternoon) while Chimaira and All That Remains play for the kiddies.

June 27th Rochester, NY !!!!!

What are the odds we can bribe one of the bandmembers to score us a disk with some of the new material before it comes out in August???? It won't hurt to try anyway

Two separate issues.

One issue is a group of corporate entities selling a tour with the pretense of inviting everyone in on a big secret that regular people can't know about. Ideals being appropriated and used as marketing slogan from people that by definition can have no contact with those ideals.

The other issue is a record label with absolutely no care for artistic vision- they're as money and trend oriented as it gets. Roadrunner dumps bands they don't think are cool enough after tours are scheduled and force those tours to be canceled because expected tour support is yanked with the record deal... I choose to not trust Roadrunner, about anything, ever. I have no doubt that Opeth is going to do very well for the next few years, but a few years is all they're gonna get.

Welcome to the 21st century. This is hardly a new development. I feel quite sorry for anyone that convinces themselves that any corporate entity cares about artistic vision, integrity etc. They don't deal in abstracts - they deal in money.

SOTU is hardly the first festival with such priorities. Your options are still there, however. Go and see Opeth or don't go and see Opeth.

... but look at what other festivals are called and what they're promising.

Ozzfest... promises Ozzy and/or Sabbath, run by Queen Sharon. It doesn't matter if the opening acts are the Ice Capades and Sesame Street Live, it delivers what it says on the marquee.

ProgPower... it doesn't matter what major corporations sponsor or sign the acts. The festival promises progressive and/or power metal bands. Even the 'out there' stuff like Orphaned Land or Devin Townsend can sneak in under a progressive tag.

Gigantour... hell, they can deliver whatever they want because the name doesn't even suggest anything.

Sounds of the Underground?

I know Lamb Of God, Opeth and SYL are gonna be there. WTF should I care about anything else?

If my ticket money was going towards the Bush re-election campaign that would be an entirely different story.

The best thing about Bush getting re-elected was 4/5 of thw world got owned. They all hated him, but in the end it didnt mean shit.

Go see Opeth dont see Opeth, as long as they come near here again I dont care stfu.

i doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference if bush or kerry (or any other candidate) was president right now

Kerry probably would ahve done something dumb like pulled out of Iraq. Where as having GWB in power got me the oportunity to see a B-52.

PS. make me a sig.

You ignored my request in the request thread, don't make me stalk you (or worse make one myself).

Maybe you are right, I love the way the left rallied before elections (US, UK and Australia) yet all the righties got back in.

Ok

I can't wait to read the reviews of thie SOTU thing, they are gonne be laugh. meh meh meh this band sucked meh meh meh not udnerground meh meh meh Opeth Roadrunner meh meh meh Demon of the fall meh meh meh.

i think its a pretty quality lineup personally. theres a couple bands that i just cant stand but i give most of them at the very least a 'they're ok.'

but even considering that, if opeth wasnt playing i wouldnt be going. ive seen all the other bands on the bill that i like numerous times (with the exception of clutch).

heres how the bill breaks down for me:
top bands (these guys are all actually going beyond making just good music and doing something unique to further their respective genres):
opeth
lamb of god
every time i die
clutch

the still awesome but not unique enough (or havnt been around long enough) to be at the top level:
SYL
unearth
a life once lost (meshuggah rip off band, but they do it pretty well)
the red chord
fear before the march of flames

good bands, just nothing special:
poison the well (a lot of people might put these guys in with the top list do to their history, they dont do much for me however)
norma jean
all that remains
the black dahlia murder

will be interesting to see:
gwar

dont like, but will sit through considering whats coming up:
chimaira

havnt ever listened to, so assuming they're not anything special:
high on fire
madball
full blown chaos

can't stand:
devildriver
terror
throwdown
from autumn to ashes

eh...still doesnt seem that bad.
