I declare that we each take it upon ourselves to build a "4 man super group"....choose your players wisely:

Drummer:
Bass Player:
Guitar Player:
Vocalist:

No keyboards, no multi-guitars, no flute players...bare bones metal.

Thy will be done...

Something to think about, would your favorite of each category work well together, or does your ultimate super group necessarily comprise of your favorite at each respective instrument?

Personally, I think it's got to be reasonably realistic. I mean, putting Faust in with Jimmy Page is going to be a little...retarded.

This band has to represent a revolution!

The only definite I have is Mikael Akerfeldt on vocals. I find his voice to be the most recognizable in recent memory, plus it is extremely versatile with growling, screeching, and crooning. David Vincent would be good, pre-fruit stage, but those days are gone apparently.

Bassist would probably be Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse. That dude can come up with counter lines to the most wicked guitar riffs, it's amazing.

Guitarist and drummer are going to be difficult... more thought is necessary.

Great topic...it would be interesting to put a core band together that can go out and play straight ahead metal that rocks your balls off. At the same time with all the diverse "musical categories" perhaps we might want to split them up...you know like core Power metal band, core Melodic Death band, core progressive metal/rock band....etc etc.

One thing to keep in mind here is that this doesn't reflect my favorite players of all time but the players I would think would match up great with each other.

For straight ahead hard rock and metal here are my picks (I will think of the other categories later):

Drums: Cozy Powell (RIP) - Cozy was a monster drummer to begin with but one thing I like was that he played with a lot of great bands in his era. Every time I listened to him he just kicked my ass!!!

Bass: Steve Harris - The thinking man bassist as I like to call him because he can write melodies and contribute lyrically as well, not many out there can do that. He might not be the best technical player out there but he fucken rules and that's good enough for me!

Vocals: Ronnie James Dio - I don't know many metal front men that can belt it out like this diminutive monster!!! I went back recently and listened to some of his older stuff with Elf and I couldn't believe how good that shit is still sounding today. His track record speaks for itself...I dare for you to find another vocalist that has done even 1/2 the stuff Ronnie did for the metal world...awesome albums with Sabbath, Rainbow and solo...come on try and find one I told you!

Guitar: So many greats, Blackmore, May, Young, Hendrix, Page, Schenker, Roth, Malmsteen, Vai, Zappa but one that has always stood out for me is Tony Iommi! He might not be the best soloist but the guy has written so of the best metal riffs ever! I don't care what anyone has to say but Black Sabbath are the Masters of Metal and Hard Rockl! I bet you can ask any metal band in the world to name their influences and nine times out of ten Sabbath will always rank up there! Zeppelin, Priest, Purple, Hendrix will always get their fair share but Sabbath rules them all (no surprise either that 3 out of the 4 musicians played in Sabbath in one form or another).

And that is that...for now! Cheers, Tony

I know what you're saying, but we declared that the world needed a revolution and your task is to build a band to lead that revolution!!

Look, I even raised a glass ->

So do you keep your choices - Powell, Iommi, Dio, Harris? They probably would work very well together....it's the NWOBHM supergroup! Up the Brits!

I'm going for an 'extreme' band line up to lead my revolution (as opposed to traditional metal), and yet I also want some level of familiarity to the masses. I want my band to be like the Pied Piper, heh...

Drummer: Daniel Erlandsson (AE/Eucharist)
Bass Player: Novy (Behemoth/Vader)
Guitarist: Dave Suzuki (Vital Remains)
Vocalist: Serj Tankian (System of a Down)

Too many guitarists out there but I took the plunge with Suzuki just because I like the way he shreds neo-classics all over his death metal pounding riffs.

Serj Tankian is my fave vocalist these days, and he brings with him that luring sense of familiarity to the mallrats (and an extreme sense of rebellious liberalism).

NOTE: Did anyone else know that SATYRICON have been signed up by EatUrMusic (SOAD's own label) for US distribution of Volcano?!

I'm so god damn un-tr00, I don't recognize a single name you listed Sorath.

Serj with Suzuki... interesting!

Vox: Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth
Guitar: Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy
Bass: Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse
Skins: Pete Sandoval of Morbid Angel

NAD: Pelle= Dead, Oystein=Euronymous, Gylve=Fenriz, Negru=drummer of Negurã Bunget

BWD: If I'm to out together a super-group, why not make it the way I want?

OK, living members only:

Vocals: Quorthon (Old style)
Guitar: Jon Nödtveit
Bass: Fenriz
Drums: Negru

The masters are the masters, Powell, Iommi, Dio and Harris are just that..they are timeless (as I was hinting with the vintage Elf albums) but I will just for the sake of adding a little spice to this topic. :)

OK lets say these old farts decide to retire and pass on the flame to the next generation.

I am sure you will be surprised at some of these picks! :)

Drums: Gene Hoglan (fun fact: We went to the same high school Millikan in Long Beach CA, we even had Spanish together...although I am sure he doesn't remember me from the last drumstick he broke) :)

Bass: John Myung (Dream Theater) one of the very few that can keep the furious pace that Gene can! John is a bass monster and has excellent writing skills.

Vocals: Mikael Akerfeldt - Besides he can double on guitar! :) And he can switch from clean to growl without missing a beat. Dan Swano came to mind as well and so did Steve Wilson.

Guitar: This was the hardest for me, I admire a lot of guitarist. One of my current favorites in the last few years is Stephan Forte of Adagio but not sure if he could fit into this nicely. After a recent performance in Santa Ana, CA at the Galaxy Theater I have to say that Alex Skolnick was fucken AMAZING and he has playing Jazz! I always liked his work with Testament but never really cared for the band as a whole, more so Alex as an individual.

This is a well rounded band, they all are so diversed that if they wanted to they could start a jazz revolution or something elese! ;) These are four incredible musicians...which I am sure will never work together! :)

Cheers, Tony

Off the top of my head, I can think of two supergroups that have already happened:

Death - Individual Thought Patterns

Chuck Schuldiner - Vocals/Guitars
Andy LaRocque - Guitars
Steve DiGiorgio - Bass
Gene Hoglan - Drums

Testament - The Gathering

Chuck Billy - Vocals
Eric Peterson - Guitars
James Murphy - Guitars
Steve DiGiorgio - Bass
Dave Lombardo - Drums

I can't make up shit better than that...

Something different:

Vox: Maynard James Keenan
Guitar: Trey Azagthoth
Bass: Les Claypool
Drums: Mitch Mitchell

Yeah...

He's one of few vocalists (along with Serj) who I'll listen to sing regardless of what they're singing.

The reason why I chose Serj Tankian is because I had Dave Suzuki playing death metal riffs. I think Serj can play both the calm and the storm role.

I would happily take Keenan on though, but I'd want to switch guitarists. Maybe take on someone like Andreas Kisser or something. You know - someone with a touch of thrash, a few drops of hardcore, a splash of punk, occasional ambience, and just let Keenan do what he does best.

Serj is good, but the first time I heard his voice I hated it. It didn't take too long to realize it fit the music very well, and on Toxicity he displays one helluva set of pipes.

Interesting story, my buddy was at System of a Down's free concert in Los Angeles in 2001 (I think) that incited a riot, his truck got banged up because he ran into a poll trying to escape the madness, haha.

Uh... I meant poLE, not poLL. Duh.
