Hi guys,
i've noticed that my recorded toms don't have the heaviness as many recorded albums out there, and i'm wondering what I can do to make them sound heavier/better. I've been using sm57's to mic the toms, and using the antares mic modeler to simulate the sennheiser 421's (and it sounds pretty damn accurate....)

So...after recording, I go through all the tom tracks and cut out all the parts where the toms aren't played... I also run each tom thru a eq and eq accordingly...but...it's just not as brutal as I would like.

any suggestions?

thanks in advance!!

new heads and correct tuning is a must, I tend to go for clear emperor heads, tune the bottom head slightly higher (get a tama tension watch to help). I've just bought some sennheiser 609's which I'm liking alot on the toms.

well... I can guarantee you the toms have new heads and are tuned. :)

As for how they sound in the room, basically, the room sounds pretty dead. There's no real natural reverb happening...which I figure is fine for our purposes...
