Hall went nuts at the MCG once in the 1998 finals for us v Melbourne. Started throwing punches for no good reason!
I don't hate Sydney, just the way they play. I don't want Hall to win a premiership, yet I feel sorry for any old South Melbourne fan under the age of about 80. Hmmmm. Plus it's very hard to support West Coast if you're a neutral.

I'm fine with huge brawls in footy. As long as there are no cheap shots it's all good. It also helps if the majority (or even a handful) of the punches actually connect, which unfortunately doesn't happen all that often in rugby league.
Gorden Tallis should have received a medal for his punch-up with Ben Ross a couple of years back. Brought a tear to this old pugilist's eye, it did. We don't see enough of it anymore.

I'm all for punches being thrown, it's just that when one player gets rubbed out for a fairy tap which couldn't hurt a baby (Fraser Gehrig v Collingwood earlier in the year), then harder punches are thrown and the player gets off, it's a crock of shit!
I couldn't believe Tallis got away with that! What about Danny Williams last year?!
The melee rule in the AFL is the biggest load of crap ever. A melee never hurt anyone, and everyone loves seeing 15 blokes go at each other!

About punches being thrown in footy... remember the Footy Show's "Bring Back the Biff" campaign?
I always wondered what they would say when a MASSIVE fight broke out and a player was either seriously injured or even killed (lucky punch etc etc). And especially considering they constant uproar about violence in junior sports I considered it highly unprofessional to be whinging about the lack of punch ups in the most senior level!

I can also see Winmar's point - Tallis got away with those hits on ben Ross and that lovetap on MacDougall in origin, but Barrett gets busted for clocking Marsh in the head, and Webb got 9 weeks for knocking out the Cowboys dude. So much inconsistency gets freakin' annoying!
AFL have to watch out, otherwise it will become a "non-contact contact sport". I've seen footage of "high shots" and "punches", and you'll see a higher shot thrown in under 5's soccer.
