Stargasm - ST
D+D records DDRCD0702 10 September 2007
By Ryan Starr
When I picked this one up, I never thought I would actually enjoy it. Stargasm certainly arent musical geniuses, but they have more talent than I was expecting. Where this self titled debut shines is in the harmony, specifically in the vocal and synth departments. The song Money really shows off their understanding of harmony and counterpoint. But there is something very familiar about this band, and once again I turn to Money as evidence. There is a huge Nightwish influence. I hear a variety of power metal themes hidden behind the industrial facade. As a matter of fact, all you would have to do is change the tone on the guitar and synth strings and you would have a modern melodic power metal sound. In point of fact, I think Nightwish has done this exact same thing.
Lastly, there is one more thing that appeals to me, and its more on a primal level. This is just great music for sex. Time to through away the Barry Manilow records and join the 21st century. The steady beat and entrancing melodies provide a perfect atmosphere for all your lusting and thrusting needs.
While this is far from groundbreaking, it is a well thought out album and for some reason that really surprised me. So, if youre interested in exploring a power metal sound for the space age, or just want to pretend youre a spaceman in bed with an alien goddess I would pick this one up.
