I'm going to school for recording arts later in the year, and I'm just curious, what should the first piece of gear I get be after I get my degree in order to start getting work/to work right away with local bands? There's so much to look at... Should I get a vocal pre-amp first? Mixer? Can anybody recommend anything?

Pick the right computer to start with. Even though I'm sat here on a PC I recommend a Mac. If your core system (the computer) is solid then you will have fewer problems later on
The computer is kind of an obvious one that I would already have, but in terms of upgrades, what would you then reccomend in terms of processors, OS, and sound card?
