The new CD is failt dull comapred to Awake and Train OF Thought .... But if you look at DT's evolution over the years they always tend to have a dull album after a really good one.
If you look at it
Images & Words - Very Exciting CD awsome music all around
Awake - Awsome Deaprture into heavier terriory - Good album
Change of seasons - All around a Dull album except the title track.
Falling Into Infinty - Total Suckage
Metropolis 2000 - Great Album cool songs good movements
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance - Boring Album
Train Of Thought - Amazing albm all around
Octavarium - Dull Album
So if the past is any indecation witht he band the next album should be Amazing. I am happy Petrucci decided to SLOW DOWN and play more like he did on the 1st 4 albums. His guitar tone on this one is his best to dat in my opinion. Its very CLEAR and Atriculated.

I don't agree with you Phish... Even though I think Mike is one of the most creative drummers (and songwriters) of all time, I think there are others in the same field, but I don't consider Van to be one of them. I love Van's playing, but it is far from creative when compared to some of the drummers around today. Go and listen to Akira Jimbo.

I still like Dream Theater, except their latest output has been pretty flat. I dig Train of Thought when i'm not really in a mood to think and Octavarium is decent, but nowhere near their earlier works.

I think this is probably their best album since Falling Into Infinity. Much better than Train(wreck) of Thought.

Portnoy CAN tune his drums. Very well i might add. He actually tunes them to specific notes (or atleast he did back then)
As for talent, the dude is AMAZING... His ability to move each appendage on his body totally independantly of one another, including playing different time signatures on different DRUMS as the same time is amazing. I really feel only 1 or 2 other guys on the planet come even close to portnoy. Those being Virgil Donati and Neil Pert....
As far as Van. I think his footwork is much more impressive then Portnoy, hes not the same type of drummer. Van is more (for lack of a better term metal) He leads with his feet as opposed to portnoy who can lead with any part of his body.
Richard Christie is another guy with AMAZING feet. Closer to portnoys caliber in my opinion. He can play very well and very quick.
As far as ween, you want to consider them prog go ahead, they are nothing more than a jam band and a shitty one at that. You want a good jam band listen to Phish or the grateful dead. Try some Rusted Root, or Indigenous. Those are good jam bands.
Dream Theater is a Progressive Rock band, thats all. Nothing special. 90% of the riffs are regurgitated 70;s 80;s and 90;s tunes.
They have ripped off a shitload of bands in the past few years.

TOOL their song 46&2 is the exact same riff DT stole for HOME on the Metro 2000 CD
They Ripped off Metallica AND Megadeth on train of though, in the same song none the less ....lol (cant remember the name of tune but they do) Theres a section that sounds like Blackened and then right after it theres a break where Labrie tries to grown and whine like Mustaine ... its pretty sickening.
They are Tapped out on Riffs, the only refresing thing anout that band is Rudess. In my opinion DT died when Moore left the band.

It's not that bad of an album. They've been experimenting with different sounds.
I personally like The Root of All Evil the best because of the fact that it's part 3 (of 4) of The Glass Prison. The fact that Portnoy wrote The Glass Prison as part 1, This Dying Soul as part 2, The Root of All Evil as part 3 and the next album having part 4, is actually pretty damn cool.
