Steven Slate Drums 3.5

I gotta say - I wasn't really a huge fan of the slate stuff in the 2.0 - 3.0 era. I upgraded to 3.5 a few days back, and I can honestly say I am fucking FLOORED. The hybrid kits are just beyond comprehension to me. I've been loading them into logic (setting them up for multi-outs is a 3 second operation in logic), throwing a smidge of parallel comp on the drum buss, adding ZERO eq, and the kits simply sound better than anything that I have ever used period. Oh yeah - and the Kontakt upgrade from 2.0 to 3.5 was equally as impressive - no more slowdowns in Logic, relatively intuitive (for an NI product!) - I can't say enough good things about this set.

There is no doubt that this Slate dude really has his shit together. I'm pretty sure my S2 install will be collecting dust from here forward. And, needless to say I'll be first in line for the new EX packs as well.

The routing in cubase doesnt work for me. Everytime i load a kit i have to go in and redo the routing in the mixer in ssd. It shouldnt be like that right?

which version of cubase? If you do the "make default" thing as explained in the manual, all you should need to do is load a kit and hit "reset".

Here is a link to two new videos of Glen Sobel showing off the 3.5 hybrid kits, these kits play awesome on vdrums:

I did....i followed it EXACTLY like the manual says....its cubase 4, but the process is the same for 4 as it is for 5.

Am i supposed to hit Make default AFTER i do the channel changes in the SSD mixer? Cause the manual says to hit it before i do those changes.

actually I think you ARE supposed to do it after you route via the configs... hmm let me look in to that. You may be on to somethin...

Hey, when you guys did the update....the instructions say to make a back up of the old folders....i think multi and library? (im not at home right now so i forget which ones.) Are you supposed to add those back into the NEW SSD folder at some point? Or does the update include those and more?

Get what im asking?

Yeah, I just made a back-up folder in the SSD install directory and named it "SSD 3.0 BACKUP" and you put the MULTIS and INSTRUMENT folders in there before you install the 3.5 stuff.

3.5 adds all the new kits and newly tweaked old ones.

Just don't move the samples folder, just paste the files that the instructions tell you to paste.

Thing is, if you ever want to use the OLD 3.0 kits or pull up an old project, you gotta place those from your backup folder in the main SSD folder where the 3.5 ones are (which, youd want to move/backup those as well).

Hope it helps!

ok so everytime i try to load a single instrument (like a snare or a bass drum) it gives me "samples not found". I dont get it. the samples didnt move so why all of a sudden are they not found. I suspect its trying to find them on my external harddrive where i backed up the old MULTIS and INSTRUMENTS. but i cant seem to switch kontakt over to just looks on my local hard drive. Even when i manually go and try to find the samples, its giving me a hard time. ANybody have any tips on how to fix this??

Instructions for anyone with Reaper wondering how to setup the outputs:

First, you have to set up the actual tracks in your DAW by opening up the fx chain/insert list window of your track that you have Kontakt 3 running on, right click on Kontakt 3 and click "Build multichannel routing for output of selected FX..." It will also make a few blank tracks that SSD isn't using. So, just delete those. Now, your tracks are made. You just have to fix the outputs in Kontakt. For some reason all of the kits are routed to a stereo track by default. To fix this, open the outputs tab in Kontakt, and then click Reset Out Map. and then Make Default to save it that way and then close, and everything should now be routed correctly... all pieces outputting on their individual tracks you just previously made.

Everything seems to be running pretty smoothly... a lot less bugs and overall smoother operation than before... I checked a few of the hybrid kits and they sound good. The Thick Metal kit also sounds good.

I did the SSD 3.5 update and went to load it and got an error about the version of Kontakt. Something about the kit was created with a newer version of Kontakt blah blah... Are we supposed to update to a different version of Kontakt?

(Sorry if this was covered already.. I've been swamped lately and haven't had much time to look into this. Thanks.)

Yep, you gotta go to the NI website, log-in, and download Kontakt Player 3.5 and you'll be all set!

thanks Joshua for the reaper tutorial, can you post this at SSD forum so I can sticky it? Aww man that didn't sound right...

it did the update from 3.0 to 3.5 at the beginning of this week,
first i was a bit confused with the update process, and then angry because the kits i have made with 3.0 didnt found the samples anymore, then that the mapping has changed and then i nearly tried to uninstal 3.5 because the the add. cymbal packs where not in the kits.. but, then i read the manual....and saw the new x-slots..lucky again.. :)

i ended this updatesiosion with a little bit mixed feelings but started fresh on the next day

1) the new kits sounds amazing
2) thanks for the add triggers for snare, toms, crashes, etc
3) i like the new idea with the add x-slots, it really makes sense and it helps to keep the memory low
4) the humanizer works very good
5) routing works great now (cubase), fast an easy

so i took an hour to write me a new drummapping for cubase and started again,

but i noticed a little bug here, one key trigger for tom 3, triggers only tom 4, and not tom 3, and the Crash A choke [KB], doesnt seem to work ??
maybe this can be fixed?

The update was bigger than i have thought, and that did confuse me a little bit, its not that there are just a few samples and kits more, you need to adapt your whole process a little bit, but when your through this, you will not go back again

Steven, your drums rules.. thank you very very much for this great update
