I've got a Marshall 1960AX (although with G12-75s in instead of the stock G12-25s) and it's too scooped and sharp sounding for what I play (mostly melodic hardcore).

For about £500 and under, what would you guys recommend (new and used) for something a bit warmer? It'll be used for live use although it'll probably end up on some other band's recordings too.

Any help is much appreciated.

I've heard that t75s blend well with v30s in a X pattern. Why not try, as was previously mentioned, to switch out a couple of speakers and see if that doesn't give you the tonal improvement you're looking for?

Definitely look at a Zilla. Paul is a massively knowledgable and helpful guy, seems like he knows everything there is to know about cabs and his build quality is second to none.

I considered swapping out the speakers but the cab is beat to shit and probably beyond saving - I'll check out the Blackstar and Zilla stuff.

What kind of speakers would you recommend for something more mid-rangey than the t75's?

Your best bet would be to try and grab a used Mesa cab, if you keep your eye out you might be able to get a 4x12 for that price,

True dat. I bought a mesa 4X12 from the guitarist of Hawthorne Heights (He passed away) for $450. It's a great cab but it still gives me a spooky feeling...

...craigslist, what a website:Spin:

I want your cab...

Edit oh wait... it's got 75s in it....
mehhh. If you want shot of it.. I'll bite.

Ps for what you want... a marshall WITH greenbacks, or a used orange cab could be really good.

I talked to somebody over at Zilla and they recommended me one of their Super Fat Boys oversized 2x12s with Vintage 30s in it for £400 plus P&P.

This is pretty tempting given their reputation, but as you guys mentioned I could get a used Mesa or Orange 4x12 for the same price.

Weight and size isn't that much of a factor, I'm looking for something that will handle overdriven tones but still be quite articulate (got jazz chords all up dis bish) so I'm going for a poor man's Emperor.

I'm using a Les Paul through a Hughes & Kettner Trilogy if that helps, but what would you guys narrow it down to?

P.S - Greyskull, I'll give you a PM when I get a new cab through.

Allright, it's probably gonna be the Zilla or the Orange in that case - I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks a lot for the input guys.

My 1960DM

^_^

You've been trying to sell that thing forever now!
I saw a french black metal band last week and one of their guitarists used one - sounded great (fidelity in black metal?!:ill:)

Anyway, I've decided on the Zilla Super Fat Boy with Vintage 30's, black tolex, basket weave grill cloth and the three piece back which came in at £450 plus postage etc.

I'll be posting about it profusely when it arrives - thanks a load to everybody who posted; I would have probably bought a Behringer dressed up as a Mesa otherwise.

This thread is extremely relevant to my interests, in fact I was even going to start one just like it until I stumbled upon it.

I too have been recommended the Zilla cab over a Mesa 4x12. Mine will be primarily for recording and reamping with a 6505+, and Marshall JCM900, but also some live use. I'm very tempted to just pull the trigger.

Tom, where abouts in Cambridge are you man? I live in St.Ives. I also can't find any fuckin Mesa cabs for sale right now! Why is it that you always see a thousand, then when you actually have the cash ready to go there just aren't any!?

I don't live there now, but go up a few time as a week for uni - once I get the Zilla through I'll bring it up if you want to hear it in person.
