Suggest a drum recording package for a noob!

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase some equipment for recording drums.
I'm entirely new to drum tracking and I'm not quite sure what to look for.

I'm going to be purchasing a ddrum trigger set for the drums and I just want mics for the cymbals.
I know very little about miking techniques for drums, also, so if someone could give tips or point me in the right direction, I would be extremely grateful. Also, my initial purpose was to ask if anyone could recommend mics I should buy for cymbals. I don't want to break my bank on these mics, I just want stuff to get the job done. For right now, anyways.

I plan on sampling the drums of the kits I record and using their samples for 100% replacement, then blending some others later on, not sure if that matters with this.

I apologize for not spending a couple hours digging through searches. I've been rather busy lately.
Thanks for the help, ahead of time! :kickass:

Get a matched pair of Oktava MK012's for OH mics. If your budget allows, get another one or two MK012 for spot micing the cymbals. Also, get a SM57 if you don't have it already. You can also look DrumDial triggers as they are much cheaper comparing to DDrum, and some people even prefer them over DDrum.

If you plan on sampling the drums, you have to buy mics for shells obviously though.

For overheads basically any small diaphragm condenser will do:

AKG C391B, Oktava MK012, Audio Technica ATM450, AT4041, Rode NT5 etc

You can use large diaphragm condensers instead, but SDC's tend to be a bit more accurate sounding as they react faster. Keep your eye on ebay and see what comes up cheap.

For spot mic's SM57's will do. Though most of the time I prefer an Audix I5.

1Audix D6
4 Sure SM 57s
1 Audix i5
2 Oktava MK012 Overheads

Then you only have to add a few mics later to really get into "pro" territory.

Come in just under $1200 and be perfectly happy.

honestly its not worth skimping if you want quality drum sounds. I just found that out the hard way! Now I am about to blow another grand on mic's after almost spending $800 already. Just to get quality kicks and Overheads cause thats where I skimped out.

Seriously save the cash and get the good shit right away!

Heres a sample i did with some fairly priced mics. no samples were used, so this is very true to what the mics have to offer. Hope this helps your decision. Also, i only have 8 ins and only the pres on my interface

OH > Rode NT4 X/Y stereo
Snare top only > Shure SM 57
Toms 10",12" & 14" > Shure SM 57
Floor 16" > Audix D6
Kick > Audix D6
all into the saffire 56

Hard to go wrong with the Audix 5pc kit and Oktava or RØDE for OH. You should have a pair of 57's already for snare btm/ride, and everyone could use an SM7b which goes amazingly well on hats.

If you want to get the best possible recording, on a budget, this is what I would do (if it is metal): Get two matched sd condensers for cymbals, another condenser for hat, and a cheap dynamic to stick under the ride. Then just go with triggers for the rest of the kit. Maybe get a room mic as well.
