Once in a great, great while the term “music” becomes meaningless in describing a piece of work within the preconceived boundaries of said art form. Sunn 0))) has always teetered on the brink of completely confusing the listener and ultimately astounding and transforming each and every listener that experiences the art created from album to album.

Now . . . what exactly does all that mean? With the release of their fifth album, White2, Sunn 0))) has taken their ability to create massive slabs of gut-churning drone and refined it to the point that anyone familiar with the band or even the genre in question will have no choice but to think of each and every album from this band as a step further along the path to true artistic enlightenment. White2 is musical art for lovers of art.

White2 plays on the minimalism Sunn 0))) has become instrumental in popularizing, but like White1, each song is crafted for a singular purpose. Album opener ‘HELL-O)))-WEEN’ is closest in sound to Sunn 0)))’s earliest incarnation. Riffs chug, gurgle, and pulsate in a slow drone that would make Earth proud, proud parents of this band. Second track, ‘bassAliens’ utilizes what Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, the two guys behind this stuff, have coined “blackfeedback violence” to its full effect. The song is a sprawling and spacious journey into unfounded droned-to-death territory. However, the clear highlight of the album, as well as Sunn 0)))’s career – in my opinion, is the third and final track, ‘DECAY2 (NIHILS’ MAW)’. None other than Attila Csihar of Mayhem, Tormentor, and Aborym fame utilizes, quite possibly, his most creative and frightening vocal skills to date. A deep, dark, black-as-hell soundscape is the backdrop to what can only be described as some of the strangest chants and throat noises ever recorded. This song is VERY deep, both musically and lyrically, so please take the time to research what Attila is doing.

Well . . . what can or can’t be said about Sunn 0)))? They’ve cornered the market on drone. They’ve arguably transcended the confines of music itself. White2 is further proof that EVERY fan of music as art needs to own at least something from this band. As far as I’m concerned, this is the one to own. The compilation with Attila is simply way beyond anything ever done by any band before them.
