sweep picking or fast alternate picking?

Yeah, being a proficient alternate picker opens up WAY more possibilities for you. Even when it comes to arpeggiating chords. I love Jason Becker, though. His sweeping is magical.

Someone who uses both tastefully is what's most impressive. Even if it involves not sweeping at all.

Have to say that someone who sweeps for the majority of their playing doesn't earn my appreciation, though.

Don't get me wrong...I'm all about the song. Steve Morse is one of the few players IMO whose solos I'm truly blown away by. He and David Gilmour, that is.

Again, like Chromatose said, technically proficient isn't worth a damn if it's not put to good use...and that doesn't mean showing off.

Yeah, right on. I'm not against someone who can shred like crazy, but it's all about the context, and the majority of the players that do so just don't have a feel that I can get into. Your mileage will vary. It just so happens nonstop sweeping doesn't get me off, I feel the ability to convey musical emotion through such means is limited.

For every decent slow blues player I've heard I can think of ten others who just wank and have no 'feel' - feel is independent of technique, people play without real taste at any speed.

This is true, but it's more prevalent in the metal scene, due to metalcore bands buying instruction vids and sweeping for a solid month and that's their entire solo. Honestly, I'd rather hear sweeping in something like Paganini than most metal bands.

I guess my opinion probably would be in the minority of many lead players because I'm all about the riff. A good SOLO, not a good technique, IMO is based on the amount of feeling conveyed through the guitarist. Is the guitar saying what he wants to say? If so, that's a good solo, IMO.

Sums it up nicely. :)

As for the thread question..neither. I mean, I like those Becker shweeps as much as those Gilbert "um, yeah so here's this lick at super fast speed *rips faster than Michael Angelo on amphetamines*" alternate pick patterns, and everything inbetween. Technique is somewhat immaterial in regards to the feel; just a matter of preference, I suppose.
