I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum or not, but I've been killing myself trying to get a bass tone I'm happy with on my Podxt/podfarm. I can get decent tones that compliment the mix fairly easily, but I want a superb tone that kind of stands out on its own as being baddass but not overpowering. I'm going for a really gnarly gritty bass tone, but it seems like I keep bouncing between something too distorted or too clean. I'm having difficulty finding good reference tones in my album collection where it's just the bass playing.

Anyone have any sweet solo'd bass tones they could point me to as reference material? I'd be much obliged and stuff. :loco:

Decapitated - Three Dimensional Defect (2:39)
Nickelback - Throw Yourself Away (2:26)

These have the drums going as well, but it's clear enough to hear the bass well.

Then of course you've got those Rockband multitracks with the Killswitch and Devildriver raw bass tones.

Hear the intro, just bass and drums. Probably my all-time favourite bass tone.

EDIT: And from 1.35 - 2.00

This is how they sounded when mixed in ruffly...

don't forget new strings. absolutely critical, never track bass with anything other than completely new strings. i used to have a podxt rackmount and even with the basspack i couldn't get anything gritty and satisfying from it. i had much better luck with sansamp bass DI driver and a parallel out to a raw DI track, putting an ampsim on the dry track and blending the two.

Thanks everyone! Excellent examples and suggestions. I'm going to give all this some study and try to work on it some more. I just changed the strings on my bass with some Rotosounds, and I must say, I think I hate them. They felt old instantly. I don't know why. I have some GHS Boomers that I think I'll try next time. And a sansamp is definitely on my wishlist. Gotta sell some gear first though.

Karnivool has always had great bass tones. I'm a big fan of this one too:

I absolutely love Martin's bass tone on these albums.
